Screen not reenabling.

I've just done a fresh install of Debian 2.6.8. Everything is set up wonderfully except for one thing (so far). When i close the lid on my laptop, the screen won't reenable when i open the lid, and nothing i do can force it to reenable, except pulling out the power/holding the power button and rebooting it.

    How can i fix this?

Also, how do i get the thing to respond to me pressing the power button by starting to shut down? It'd be handy if i could just press the power button on the laptop, and it'd shutdown.
