Internet users in Germany can now have a DSL line for as little as €3.99 per month. Germany's biggest ISP, T-Online, has launched its no-frills DSL brand Congster in a fight back against low-cost rivals, Reuters reports.

But there is a catch: Congster is a stripped-down Internet access service, without an email address or SMTP access. Tech-savvy subscribers should run their own mail server, or stick to webmail services such as Hotmail. Additional services such as premium content and anti-virus software are also not available.

More importantly, there is a monthly usage limit: for €3.99 per month you can get 2000 MB, or about 700 Mp3s. Heavy downloaders can buy 8000 MB for € 12.99 per month. If you exceed the limit you pay 1.39c per megabyte.

T-Online's biggest competitor is Freenet, which currently charges €5.90 for 2000 MB.

Surely that means dialup is all but dead over there now ?

They have had ISDN over there at practically no extra cost for so long that I'd doubt that any urban dwellers would recognise a normal modem anymore.

€4 for 2GB and since users have to use webmail - less viruses !

1.39c/MB - have to be careful though..

That's no so bad though. You wouldn't be heavily in debt if you mistakenly went over by a few hundred megs. It about €14/GB. Not breaking the bank.

It is not thaaat cheap in Germany. You can get €0 packages (rather than the mentioned € 3.99 one) of volume capped 1,2 and 3 Mb services, but for all your dsl packages you have first to buy a special dsl line subscription, which will add another € 16 to your € 16 normal line rental cost (all inc VAT).
And the 1 Mb+ bb is not available on all lines yet, it is currently available on 89.8% of lines. The unlucky ones have to be content with a provisional special 380 kb/s broadband solution.

But yes, those offers leave no more room for dial-up flatrates.

How much is the line rental over there ?
IIRC you can also get naked DSL so their entry level BB is less than Eircom line rental.
And Deutsch Telecom has more or less a monoploy in many areas.

Don't think you can get naked dsl in Germany. On the incumbents pagehttp://www.t-com.de/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/PK/de_DE/-/EUR/PK_DisplayProductInformation-Keyword;sid=eys0Cw1QEF-gWkyFBYY-kyxYt383L99uFn9yzQAaWUcEUQ==?ProductRef=0302001000019%40PK&KeywordPath=Katalog%2fInternet%2fT-DSL%2fT-DSL_Anschluss
they'll mention the price for 1,2 and 3 Mb dls connections and say in the footnote (1) that this is additional to having a normal connection, of which there are a variety (analogue, ISDN and with various call rates and packages), starting from 16.99 I think.

I had to laugh when I read that. You call that unlucky? :p I feel sorry for the poor folks who live up the road from me who connect to the net at an average speed of 24kbps.
