Are you looking for things to do with the family or are you venturing off on your own?
    What are the age ranges?
use this web site to learn the subway before you come:

some good advice.... well since I am up in NYC a lot and since I used to work up there, I think I can help out...
    1. People aren't as nice in NYC as they are in Ireland, so don't be offended
    2. Don't give money to beggars, they will follow you all around the city
    3. Learn the subways... they are the best way to travel around the city... cabs will rip you off like crazy!!!
    4. Do some research on the hotels u will stay at... a lot of them cost an arm and leg..
    5. Definitely try to get out of the city for some other sites... either go north up to Boston/Cape Cod, or south to New Jersey... check out Atlantic City for some good casino action(I only live about an hour from AC)...
    6. Don't walk by yourself at night unless it's a well lit area...
    7. Stay in Manhattan... don't venture up to Bronx, Queens, or Harlem... could get a bit hairy..

Hope I helped ya out.... email me if you want any more specifics.... NYC is a great place!!! lots to do and lots of pubs!!! can get a bit expensive though so put yourself on a budget!!! take care!!!

NY is great. I spent 6 days there during the summer and only left manhattan once. Went to the bronx and got lost :p
So much to do there, empire state building, statue of liberty, ground zero, central park, the list goes on and on.
We stayed on madison avenue in a hotel. Was about $80 per night for a double room. Can't remember the hotel. Was ok, nothing special. Don't expect room service or a smiling face when you check out. Main thing is it was cheap.
As RyanfromNY mentioned, take a trip out of NY if you can. A bus to Boston only cost about $30-$35 return to Boston. Or get the China town bus for $10 each way. It is a 4hr drive. Boston is so much more relaxed than NY. While your in Boston it is only another 1hr20min to get to Cape Cod depending on traffic. I have spent the past two summers working on the Cape.

Cape Cod is beautiful!!! my parents used to take me up there to vacation when I was young... Nantucket is gorgeous too!!! Ground Zero has changed a lot in the past year... I'm a paramedic, and was deployed up to Ground Zero on 9/11 so I remember it from the rubble and the bodies and whatnot, and from what they've done, it's a great tribute to the friends I lost... I can't wait to see what they build there... also, if you're looking to go to Boston, there is a train that is direct out of the city and costs about 40 USD.. 80 USD is a good price for a hotel in that district!!! the 2 expensive areas to stay would be the area around Times Square and the financial district which is in the southern part of the city... some decent deals up around central park... but u just have to look... check out www.travelocity.com
