Gas Boilers

I've bought a new house that has a back boiler gas fire in the living room fire place. It's old and ugly. I've been told that replacing it with a nicer back boiler fire will call about €3500 which I can't afford. Will moving it be as expensive as I've been told and can I take the fire place off as I don't think that I need it for heat. All suggestions will be appreciated.

You cannot move a back boiler, consider fitting a wall hung one elsewhere.

That price sounds like porkies.Tradesmen inflate prices particularly if the potential customer seems to know nothing or is a woman ( my neighbour experienced this :( ). €3500 sounds like a price for whole new system. Get a few more quotes from heating comapnies you think you can trust. Those fancy new gas fires are certainly less that €1000 and you could probably disconnect that boiler. And yes the fireplace can be removed OK, was done in my own family home.

What are you planning on doing with the boiler once you get rid of he fire and fireplace?! €3500 sounds reasonable to me for a new system. Your best bet would be to ring BGE and get them to set up a sales lead for a new system - the guy who comes out will take a look around and tell you your options - it's free so you're not obliged spend any money it might give you a better idea of what you want to do....

A wall hung fan flue or conventional flue boiler (preferable since much quieter and more reliable) would be the best option. AFAIK the firefront/back boiler combos can't be separated into two separate units so if you remove the firefront the boiler can't/shouldn't be operated independently.
