wrongfully powering on

    Hi all,

I've got an Intel D875PBZ mobo, running an Intel 2.4GHz cpu. I recently put the lot together with an ASUS video card, Creative sound card, Sweex modem, and so on...

What happens is that when I power on the unit, it does so from the flick of the power switch. But nothing comes up, no POST beeps, and no signal from the video card. I replaced the video card, as I thought it could be the problem. I've resat all the cards. I checked and resat the front panel connectors in different combinations in case I was getting it wrong. Cleared the CMOS. Same problem keeps happening.

Holding the power button in does nothing also.

All the spares have worked with the previous P3 board/cpu. How can I find/suggest ways if I am doing something wrong, or for troubleshooting - I'm at a loss!

    Cheers,

    Seanie.

First check the cables running from the switches and lights on thefront panel eg. power, reset power and HDD lights against the manual to make sure there is nothing wrong there. Possibly disconnect all of them bar the power switch and try that (if your up to it take them all of and use a flat screw driver to cross the pins for the power on switch.)

Remove everything except the procesor from the board and see if that makes any difference. If the RAM is not present you should hear some beeps from the motherboard. If this does happen add the ram and try again then IDE's then PCI & AGP etc. until everything is back in and working or it should highlight which component is causing teh problem.

Is the power supply P4 compliant, I know some motherboards mainly AMD AFAIK have a little 4 pin power connector on them

Thanks Kazujo. One thing I did do was power on with, then without, the video card - no difference. I did the same with the front panel connections - with, then without - no difference.
If I unplug the power block from the mobo, it doesn't start the power supply fan, so that rules out the power supply.

I will try for the removal of all the cards etc bar the processor, and see what heppens there.

    I'll post back later.

Happens me now and again actually,i can never pinpoint the problem, would the PSU have anything to do with it?

I flick it on and off until something works.

I had a problem like this and traced it to a bad IDE cable.

Right, I think I have narrowed it down to the processor actually. Its a 2.4GHz P4, socket 478.

I removed everything - cards, RAM, connections... except for the CPU and fan. When I flicked the PSU power switch, it still came on. So, I removed the CPU, but left the fan plugged in and ya know what? The fns didn't come on!

So, what is wrong with my CPU? It worked in my other computer before I upgraded that one with a 2.8GHz. The pins on the 2.4 are all straight, and the socket seems to fit fine.

    Ideas?

    Seanie.
