I got an external dvd writer for my laptop but it took me 35 minutes to burn a cd, haven't tried a DVD yet. I got a popup when I attached the drive saying "You must add a HIGH SPEED USB Host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance" Can I get one of these for a laptop? and where?

Does it go into the free slot at the side of my laptop? It seems to be the only slot thats not in use and I've never used it so don't know the name of it

Yes that long slot is the PCMCIA slot. Most laptops have two one above the other. That card should work fine for you.
