tell 'em that net connections are down all over the country due to some idiot crashing a reindeer driven sleigh into the main eircom transmitter ;)

ah come on its christmas, a time for spending time with your family not sitting in front of a computer screen!!

Actually I'm one of those ppl. Our line went weird on Monday (crackling). Guy came out to repair it and for talking it's fine now.

Problem is afterwards when I tried to connect to the next I got "remote pc not responding"... then after a million tries I'd connect at 16.4 for about 2 secs and it would die.

Then I rang tech "support" who advised me that the line being repaired prbably changed my modem drivers and asked me to reinstall my modem  I won't say anything about that.

Now I can connect to the net and it's at 14.4!!!!! and its unstable as hell and I'm pissed off cos I won't have net access till after xmas when I can get someone to come out and look at the line again cos whatever yur man did it's seriously affected my connection. So basically I'm grumpy.

EDIT: I work for a money transfer company and this morning my first call was a guy BITTERLY complaining that his intended payee collect a grand total of .87p less than expected..... although that doesn't beat the time I had a Nepalese dude on then line for 30 minutes complaing that his payee collected .01c (us) less than expected......

Maybe a lot of people this year will be seeing their loved ones via webcam. Or not if their connection is fuxx0red.

Or how about this scenario: Little Johnny gets a shiny new Dell for chrimbo. Mammy and Daddy have it all set up for him for when he gets up. 7am he comes thundering into his parents room:
"Mam, Mam, Mam, can I go on the intarweb, huh can I Mam, please mam"
"Ah sorry Johnny, but the bad man from Eircom said he's too hungover to be arsed to make sure our overpriced copper wire would be working today. But I'll bet there's a load of good stuff on the telly..."

That's very strange... Our landline went a bit wonky last week too but the bb was working fine. Repair guy came out the next day and fixed it perfectly... we needed the wires replaced.

Pfft AIB's desk is still open. We've had 2 calls since 8am! There's no need to be here :P

€60 to fix a fault with a line you're paying them already to provide and maintain service through, caused by someone they sent out?

When he comes out, drop em and bend over - you can pay him extra to fcuk you as well.

agreed azezil... as protest my computer will stay off from 6 this evening until stephen's day.

Yeah I know but the phone line for talking is fine... It's just whever he did it's no longer making my modem happy....... It's irritating more than anything really.

    Anything else on the line?
E.g. Sky digital or security system?
Do you hear any buzzing on the line?

What version of windows? *puts on his troubleshooting hat*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,880 ✭✭✭Canis Lupus

no.... No buzzing or extra ****. Internet was fine the night before then the line went weird on Monday. U could make and receive calls but there was mad crackling on the line. Yur man came out, did a bit of rewiring outside the house and also said there wasa fault down the road. So you can speak now but it might be my imagination but things seem quieter than before. When the modem dialled out initially it was making all the right beeps but didn't sound like it was getting a reply from the ISP. Now it makes the ring out noise a few times, each time it gets quieter then it will make a connection at 14.4 which is fairly unstable...... It can only be the line thats the prob which will only be sorted by the repair guy who I'll have to pay for after xmas. (I'm not spending drinking money on it now)

    ah ok
sounds like the gain has been lowered on the line.

Call 1901 - 2, asked them to increase the gain on the line (no sure if that requires someone to call out)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,880 ✭✭✭Canis Lupus

    cool will try that.

As az said it sounds like the gain is going to be a bit low, but watch they don't charge you for it.

I remember having this discussion with a guy from eircom about 6 years ago, and speaking to a few other people at the time. I think the contract back then stated it was for a voice line only, and that they didn't have to provide the quality for an internet connection.

However, since offering to supply internet connection through eircom, I think this means (could be wrong - it was the conversation with another guy) that they have to provide a line capable of withholding an acceptable connection for it. If they advertise 56k, they had better well get it close to that.

Sometimes you find as well that eircom will go cheap and split the line without telling you. Anyone close to you got a new telephone line installed? Again, as it was years ago, I can't remember if they're able to just do this, or if you can request as you're paying for a fully functional line, make sure that you're the only person using it.

Az would know better the ins and outs of it, but wether he would be allowed to state it, would be another matter. There's so much that the customer is allowed by law, but the agent on the phone has to dissuade the end user from realising it.

well they wont come out before christmas anyway, they only come out when they feel like it.

well this is down in good old rural Kerry. The guy who "fixed" the line is local just haven't been able to get him (haha) on the phone. Doesn't matter I'm switching to ISDN if I can after xmas with the free connection offer

    .
I'm not sure about the legalities so all i'll say is we weren't informed of that in training.

However from personal experience, my parents had that problem. Eircom split their line without theirr consent and as a result we lost internet connection, many calls to Tech support and 1901 before they told us and then more yelling to get us back on to a single line, and that resolved the issue.

six years ago? i was told that by eircom a year and a half ago. Was getting max 10kbps connection, tech support guy said they only gaurantee telephony then hung up. Hence our move to UTV the next day :)

maybe a long shot but you can try de-selecting the "wait for dial tone before connecting" check box. when i was on NTL, we were gettin a crackling and when i dialled a number, it didnt even make the tone noises. when i unchecked that, it worked fine.
