    Evening all,
I brought home my work laptop for the xmas and hooked it up to my desktop.
My desktop is part of a workgroup so i changed my laptop from my work domain to my own workgroup. This change required a restart so i did just that.
But now when i try to log in it looks for a username/password. I've tried my work user/pw but no joy. And there is no option on the log in screen to change domain as i have seen on other machines.

The laptop is running windows 2000 pro.

    Can anyone help me here?

My IT guy is not going to be impressed in january!!!!

    Cheers

You're not on the network there is no workgroup or domain to log into. You need to log on to the local machine (the laptop) when you're off the network not the domain and not the workgroup. So instead of selecting the domain or workgroup you select the Computer name (or type it in) and then login. Once thats selected the workgroup/domain option is not required or selectable.

However this assumes you have a user account (local account) on the laptop. You may only have an account on the network at work. In which case you can't logon locally. Though I would guess that there IS a local account. It would be unusual not to.

I'm going out now but I'll check back latter to see how you get on.

    Cheers Ricardo,

I have looged on to this computer when not connected to my work netwok before. So this would mean i do have a local account?

As for entering the computer name, I dont have any where to enter it. All i get when i start is user/password fields.

Is there anyway to by pass the local user/pw logon?

Try Administrator and no password. Or password for the password.

You should have created a local account before you took it off the domain, you'll need the Administrator password now to get on.

Download a version of linux on your desktop. Burn the ISO to cd and insert into laptop cd drive. When the laptop starts up it will pick up on the boot cd and let you install linux.

Once thats done you can do as suggested above and use one of the many files to get the win2k password reset...

of course this is all assumeing your drive is partisioned :D

If you've done it before then you have to have one. Theres a local admin account at least so you have to be able to select it even if theres no account for your username. Where you select Domain or Workgroup is there not another option? Usually theres a drop down where you can select Domain, Workgroup or Local Machine (Computer Name). I have a w2k machine at work. I'll check on it, in the morning. I'm a bit rusty.

The lesson here is to check these things before you leave the office!

Theres hacks you can try. But wait till I check the machine at work.
