Does anyone know how to improve the download speeds of torrents as I'm downloading premiership highlights and is going very slow, 2kb/s :eek:
I'm on ESATBT's 512K connection. Anyone got any help?

Have you opened the appropriate ports on your router? If not, do a search.
Have you forwarded the appropriate ports on your firewall? If not, see 1.
Are you connected to many hosts\peers? Have they much of the file?

i turned off the firewall while im downloading, but how do i open the approprate ports on the router?

iv seen how to set it for the netopia but, how do u set it for esatbt's router?

where are you getting the highlights?
I was using www.soccerclips.net but they got smacked by the media companies...

I fixed this myself just last week.
Go into the router's settings page (type 192.168.1.1 in your browser usually - username admin, password ususally 1234)

Under the advanced section, choose NAT. Ensure that SUA only is selected and choose edit details.

Now enter ports 6880 to 6890 (the default downloading and trackers for bittorrent are catered for), and enter your PC's IP Address in the IP box. This won't work if the PC has DHCP, so setup a static IP first.

I've done some routing (get it "routing" ) on Boards and got the green lights. Is that the best I can do as the downloads still aren't that fast.

Well it all depends on how many people are seeding, and how many peers there are.

As a general rule, the more seeds the better. If you are firewalled, you can only connect to people who aren't firewalled.

You can also download off peers, but only if they have something you don't.

no i turned off the firewall.

Seeds: 1(3)
Peers: 5(8)

does this mean I'm downloading off 1 out of 3 seeds and 5 out of 8 peers?

It means you're connected to that many, not necessarily downloading off of them.

There is only one person with the complete file (out of three possible that are on the torrent).

Thats why it is going slow.

it will tell you if your ports are open
if you pass this test, then there's nothing else you can do... ie. the speed problem is with the torrent
