Windows recognising large HDD

    Hi all.

You know this thing about large drive support and 48bit addressing etc. If using W2K, you have to edit an entry in the registry and get the latest service pack (I've done this before for a 200GB drive)

Lets say you are doing a brand new build with brand new parts. HDD size is 160GB. When you get to do the W2K install (bootable CD), will the HDD be still recognised, even tho it is over 137 GB?

    Any thoughts?

AFAIK you need at least servicepack 4 installed if you want large drives in win2k. Then you should probably run the "Large drive enabler" program. I think its made by maxtor. That should make sure all's ok.

Just make sure that the bios supports 48bit LBA. If it doesn't, DO NOT FORCE WINDOWS TO RECOGNISE LARGE DRIVES. Without bios support you WILL destroy your data.

EDIT: Oops,. i think i misunderstood... The HD should be recognised, but probably not at its max capacity. The bios should recognise it as a 160gb, but windows may not. IF the bios doesn't, thats a really bad sign.

Well, seeing as it's going to be a brand new build, the motherboard will have an up-todate BIOS loaded.

Plus the HDD will be blank until you load W2K onto it anyway. It's a bit like which came first...the chicken or the egg. How do you get large drive support witout windows being loaded in the first place.

The parts have been ordered from komplett...so just see what happens with the build.

Well, what will probably happen is as follows.

    [SAD_ATTEMPT_AT_HUMOR]
    1) You put all the parts together, and realise you have a dodgy stick of ram, so after a week or three's waiting, you get your replacement, and you get the thing to boot

    2) You realise your can't find your windows 2000 cd, so you waste a day or so tracking one down.

    3) When you get around to installing Windows, it will recognise the harddrive as being 127gb (or is it 137gb?). Thats ok. Just make a small "windows" partition, about 10gb (max) in size (DO NOT FORMAT THE REST OF THE HARDDRIVE YET!) and install windows as per normal.

    4) WHen you boot into windows, get the large drive enabler, and run it. That should change the registry settings and allow windows to use 48bit LBA, and access the full capacity. Now is when you format the remaining area of the harddrive and you should be able to make a partition with all the remaining harddrive space in it.

    5) You'll buy me more ram, and a new harddrive, and... erm... a new computer!

    Merry christmas!
