Will anyone even bother buying the new version of windows that the EU have forced Microsoft to create (i.e. it will not have Media Player included).

Since the normal version will still be on sale and I'm guessing both will be the same price so if you were buying windows would ya not just buy the one with media player becuase you might as well have it as not for the same price?

I'd rather buy the one without it. If I'm not going to be using an application then I don't really want it on my machine. Even better would be a version that let me choose exactly which applications will be installed.

After the verdict was announced the price of Microsofts stock went up 4%.

Clearly it was a good result for Micrsoft.

And I like having control over my PC, controlling which programmes are installed/run. That's why I like Linux. :)

Yeah because linux is so compatable with all programs

http://www.codeweavers.com/ - will more windows apps to run on linux than WINE does

rdesktop 192.168.0.1 - to connect to a Microsoft Terminal Server, even microsoft will wax lyrical on the lower TCO of using TS.

I can remember ordering in a copy of Microsoft Project, wouldn't run out of the box , had to get an upgrade for it from microsoft connections before it would install on one of the versions of windows listed on the Box.

There are about 200 apps broken by Service Pack 2 in XP to add to the long list of applications that no longer work in windows , there was also a lot of unpleasentness with hidden and undocumented API calls when windows 95 came out, many of which were faster than the documented ones, the only apps that used these were suprise, suprise Microsoft office and other M$ products.
google for "Dos ain't done till Lotus won't run"
Previously Microsoft had only said it would make Indigo available for earlier operating systems, which potentially meant that applications developed for Longhorn would only run on Longhorn systems
ref; computerscope Setp 2004 front page.

on an interesting note - makes you wonder what will be still in longhorn if they keep stripping out stuff to the 2006 shipdate - No media player , No WinFS , etc.

Pity they won't remove IE too

nLite lets you choose which components of Windows to remove from an installation. You can also slipstream in the service packs so you don't need to install them speperately afterwards.

Bye bye IE, media player, Wordpad, useless games/screansavers/wallpaper, and just about anything else you care to remove.

Am I the only one who likes WMP, wmp10 is quite good really (love the way it shrinks to the tool bar, and keeps track of yer songs in a directory)

That said, it is quite big, but i was using winamp before this, and changed so......

    Anyone with me??

It's a pain. It plays videos, great, but other than that there's no customisation, poor playlist control, takes forever to load, on any machine, and all-in-all is useless for anything more than previewing a video clip.

There are far more superior media players out there for free.

And you can't stop it autoplaying CDs. (I've tried ALL the solutions, seriously).

Pay???? I should think they will still hand it out for free on the intarweb

Seamus, care to recomend another, free media player that does a better job (tried BSplayer, hated the UI)

    Winamp

The nice thing about BSPlayer is that you don't need the UI, everything is keybound. But then again it's horses for courses and all that jazz.

    Insert CD. Hold shift key.

Not the solution you were alluding to wanting more than likely but it works.

(Stops any autorun - I find it quite handy)

Never been a fan of Media Player after version 6. I use Media Player Classic now.

tbh i'm more of a mouse person myself, so BSplayer is out too

    vlc media player

WMP makes me want to hurt myself.

VLC is great because you don't need to install codecs - it has them built in as modules.
The UI is a bit clunky and I find it stupid the way it has 2 buttons on the taskbar when viewing a video, but it is still very good at what it does!

edit: btw the version I have is quite old, its very possible they've improved on it in the meantime.
