creative zen touch problems

I just got myself a zen touch 20gb a few days ago and I'm having a really annoying time with the touchpad. No matter what sensitivity I set it to it's totally unpredictable, either racing through the menus or not responding at all. I've also had to reset it twice after it froze up completely , the first ime the day after I bought it. Also the software doesn't always detect it. Before I bring the poxy thing back and change it for an ipod, I just wanted to know if this is normal or have I got a dud player. I'veupdated all the drivers/firmware etc. already.

Sounds like a dud. The touchpad on the Zen (Touch and Micro) is always extremely sensitive. I mean, lowest sensitivity is too high for most people. It takes a couple days to adjust.
As for "not responding".... cold hands? If your hands are extremely cold, the touchpad seems not to work so well. Same with the iPod...

Never seen a Zen freeze... but I have seen some poxy cabling come with them - possibly the reason behind the software not detecting it.

I had the same few problems when i first got my zen touch, and i was thinking of bringing it back. In relation to the touchpad itself, i found it hard to get use to, and even now its a case of going really slow, or letting it fly up or down the list. The general consenses(sp?) is that the touch pad is a load of pants. I mostly have it on random which means i don't use it that much anyway.

The battery life and price are the main reasons i bought it, but if you could transplant the ipods click wheel onto it, you'd have the best player around. i also found that it froze up on me about 2 or 3 times when i had it for the first few days, but not since, and thats about 3 months ago.

If you do think that your touchpad is fooked, i'd bring it back and try to compare it with another in the shop, therefore you'll know if its busted or not.

The touchpad isn't completely banjaxed because it is sometimes useable but it's a major pain in the hole to use. Cold hands might be something todo with it as it seems to work better indoors but the freezing up is totally crap.

I hate touch buttons and dials. Theres no tactile feedback. Its a real ergonomic no no.

Did you get the latest Firmware? The locking up is presumably unrelated to the Touch Pad issues, maybe bad files? Just be sure to "stroke" the Touch Pad as opposed to "press" on it! :D

People complained about laptop Touch Pads in the same way when introduced... some even pined for the days of that damn "joystick" thing that preceeded Touch Pads.

I have the latest firmware but all you have to do is look at the touchpad funny and it goes racing cown through the menus it's so sensitive. Does anyone know if you can get a remote with buttons? Apart from the crappy touchpad it's pretty good and i don't want to replace it.

Theres a remote with an FM radio in it. But haven't seen it anywhere.

You can only get that remote direct from Creative, not through shops:

I just found it on creatives website but it's €60, only available on their online store and sold out. Balls.

Its makes the whole unit quite expensive :(

Why don't you just get it replaced? Much better than buying remotes and things to get around the problem.

These MP3 players are very expensive, yet seem to break easily. :(

iPods break too. Someone else on the forums had to bring their iPod back and get a replacment unit.

I got an ipod yesterday and it's lovely! much easier to use the unit itself and the software so hopefully it will last longer than a week. pity it's more expensive but i suppose you get what you pay for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Yeah, you get what you pay for... you get warranty with things you buy, for this exact purpose. When it breaks, you get a replacement.

    Actually, I give up...

Sounds to me like you wanted the iPod even though you had the Zen. Which is why you didn't just replace it with another one. Hope it works well for you. But you've been warned that the iPods are not that robust either.

I took the zen back to the shop, they had none left in stock, it was a bitch to use even when it worked, so I got my money back and spent a bit more to get something that worked.

im havin problems with the USB cable for the zen now. it wont recognize that its plugged in at all. dya think its a crappy cable? Can ya buy a new one seperatly?

Shouldn't be too hard to get, my digital camera uses the same type of lead so it can't be that rare.

mine crashed once and had to be reset second day i got it with no probs since then on that front

however the keypad lock button has just randomly fallen out and i have to go into town to get it replaced by dixons who just said yeh we dont care bring it in, you get new one. which was cool of them.

Hey Abccormac, it sounds like you should get your Zen replaced. If its crashing alot and if the touch pad doesn't seem right just get a new one under warrantee, its worth it. My one hasnt givin any trouble at all, far better then the iPod imho(which I sold cuz I hated the damn thing!)

I'm considering a Zen. What didn't you like about the iPod BTW?
