Recently tried to buy something from play.com and they said there was an address problem even though its identical to my credit card statement, anyway they wanted me to ring them (international number) even though i gave them the security code via email. Would have thought that they should bear the cost of the call, guess they have enough customers.

Disappointing as they seem to be held in high regard by many.

If you look around the usual computer shops in Dublin you can pick up the 'academic' upgrade version of XP pro for €120. It contans a full install you just need your old windows disc briefly during the install.

Do you have to prove your academic status during the installation?

Hey guys.Had this prob id say about a month ago. Its because they changed there shipping whatz it. It goes nuts when it sees the postcode for England not selected and Ireland as the country with no postcode.

When you ring its takes 1min and they take the postcode option off your ordering window. Its no problem its happening loads but and e-mail from them would have helped a lot.

But why wont they ring you, their problem after all. What can a phone call do that an email cannot?

Oh something to do with needing your credit card details and they want to get it from you.Not over the internet. I know its a b*tch but honest takes about a min and they were spot on and all apologies.

it's extremely anoying IMHO. had to do it once about 1 year ago, somehow kicked myself to phone them, then when my creditcard run out I changed the expiry date to the new one (same card number, same address too) - placed an order and they asked me to call again. so I send them a lenghty email full of lovely wording about how I value their wondefull ordering system, and wowed myself never to order there again. FFS, change the ordering system to accept security codes. It's not like dvd's are high priced items.

What is it with the majority of european shops forcing you to provide additional details to prove you are really the card holder (scanned/faxed papers etc)? Why is the security code not enough? Must be a european thing to fight the progress that is the creditcard :-/

Not sure what you lot are bitching about. I would be far more worried if they didn't do checks like this. I can just imagine the moaning and wailing from you all if your cards were used illegally.

That's happaned to me in the past before, you have to ring them. They once sent me a double order, 8 DVDs in total, and I had the call them to sort it out and post them back at my own cost before I got my CC refunded. I got the money back out of them another way though.

Well great, thanks for your constructive post. I have no problem in then doing checks at their expense. I take credit cards myself and i would never dream of asking a customer in the UK or Europe to phone me so I can get details from them that I should already have. I would phone them at my expense, I believe in putting the customer first but I guess you dont get that.

Please dont reply unless you have something constructive to add

Next time just ring your credit company, it is the merchants responsibilty to prove you ordered the stuff.

Happened to me too - had to ring them up. If stuff was posted from play.com on the 20th (last monday) whats the chances of it getting here tomorrow ?

The reason it's so cheap is probably because it's old SP 1 stock that they're trying to get rid of.

You could also purchase a Windows 98 to Windows XP Home Edition SP 2 upgrade for about €160 in PC World.
