How to change file type?

I have a sound file that's been saved as a .jpg file, so when i go to open it with windows media it says that it can't read the image.

How do I convert the file to a .mp3 file? Right clicking and going to 'rename' does nothing for me and nothing else I've tried has worked.

So how do you change the name of the extension from .jpg to .mp3?

open windows explorer or any folder on your pc.
go to tools > folder options > view > untick "hide xtensions for know file types"
    rename jpg to mp3
    should work

my computer >> Tools >> Folder Options >> View tab >> untick hide file extensions

    click ok apply etc.

go to the file in question

    eg sound1.jpg

    and rename it to sound1.mp3

Also, if you have windows xp, you can right-click on the file, choose open with and select Windows Media Player. It should work this way.

Plus make sure it's the correct size for an MP3 file (about 3-5MB generally). If the size is only in the order of kilobytes then you probably downloaded a cover art picture by accident or something.

This didnt work. It would say 'image type unsupported' or something along those lines. The other method worked fine though.
