Girl ends her life after getting banned from Everquest

Lum the Mad appears to be getting hammered with people at the moment.

But the general jist of it is one of the guides in EQ was banned, why I'm not sure but she took her life because of it (and quite some other stuff going on). Quite sad.

There is a rumour going on that the guide in question was actually framed. Someone had posted under her name and claimed to be her. Shortly afterwards the same person posted claiming they got her banned. The next day they found out she had taken her life.

    Man that's terrible,

The game is fun and I enjoy it, but all too often it seems people develop an obsession with it, which leads to the exclusion of all else in their Real lives. On rare occasions, people would appear to rely on it as something of a 'Backup' life if their real life ain't what they hoped. If the backup life is taken away after the real life has failed .. then we get trouble.

    It's a tragedy.

Will be interesting to see if Blame is levelled on anyone for this.

    JAK.

What's really disturbing about this is Verant are systematically erasing any posts on various boards relating to her or the incident.

Some posts dating back to August have been removed.

    Yeah,

    I noticed that Hobbes,

Went looking through the major sites, and found nothing even remotely connected.

Guess the Publicity wouldn't do them any favours for parents shopping for XMas Presents.

Doesn't surprise me at all, some of us have seen the kinda $hit obsessed people like Adra get up to, suicide was contemplated by a number of people that we know of because of this B-itch and theres a good chance someone we don't know of actually has.

I think Parents and friends should be aware of the dangers and watch out for peoples obsessive behaviour, if someone can't stay away from the net for 1 night and go out and socialise and they can't sit in company in your living room for more than 10 mins without rushing back to their PC then theres something seriously wrong.

Always said Everqueer and the likes are only for nutters !

Maybe she needed +2 Real Life and all would have been better smile.gif

(I realise the above was in bad taste but it had to be said!)

From the couple of links here, and a few others about the place it seems clearly to be a hoax

End of the day, this speaks a lot to me...
The QQ Staff has made numerous phone calls to the police department and all of the funeral homes surrounding the area where Sheyla was reported to have lived. This was not Colorado as reported earlier. The police department told us there had been no suicides or suspicious deaths for a week in that area. None of the funeral homes had any person by the name of Sheyla Morrison or Sheyla Arnold. The Medical Examiners office, that covers 1/3 of the state, advised us that they also had no information on a Sheyla Morrison or Sheyla Arnold.

If we presume the poster is half as competent as he appears to be it is very clear that, at the very least, all is not as it seems!

On the subject of games companies 'controlling' UBB posts, this is not the first or the last time a game developer and/or publisher tries to control what is said/not said on a fan site, or its UBB smile.gif

Careful Shinji, Damo plays EQ you don't want to offend him.

Taking this new information into consideration, I have decided to retract my previous statement, and instead to point out that while, on a human level, I am deeply saddened by this highly regrettable tragedy and loss of life, I must also express, on a slightly more conscious level, the underlying sentiment behind my feelings towards this event, namely - "WHAT A F*CKING LOSER!"

    etc, etc.

Strange one - I mean anyone who kills themselves over a computer game clearly has issues in life, yet on the other hand they must be a total loser also smile.gif

If she did in fact do herself in of course, on the other hand there are living players of EQ that make me think that State enforced euthanasia can't come soon enough smile.gif

Mind you I'm looking forward to Anarchy Online, so I dunno really.....

The general feeling is the whole thing is a fake, but then if I was her parents I wouldn't want it blabbed all over the net either.

Online RPG's are pretty dangerous in the addiction department (I am not joking). With something like Quake or CS you can log in, whack a few people and log out if there is nothing happening. With the RPG's you slowly start to build up in game friends and find having to spend more time camping the orc spawn for the legandary tinfoil axe to drop. All the while neglecting your real life.

Finally when you do get banned, your life is pretty much wiped out (at least with internet addiction you can get a new ISP wink.gif )

    Action games aren't addictive????
I can't count all the times I stopped for "One more round of TFC" and looked at the alarm clock to find it was 6am.
Once I couldn't see properly for a day because I spent the whole day and night before soaking up radiation from my pc because I couldnt accept being beaten by LPBs.
For a week I couldnt connect cuz BT were digging up all the phone lines. It ****ed me off sure, but the end of my life? Um... no. I have "friends".

Are there any photos of this girl? Don't worry I don't have a fetish about dead people, it's just I have a theory that she was a Goth. If so it would be a field day for the papers, cuz they could blame computers and rock music at the same time.
    wink.gif

I don't know much about this subject but what I bed led to believe is that this only killed off there EQ character and it has been picked up wrongly by other sad ppl who don't know what the real world is like.

Thats pretty sad. Ever wonder how people get
so engrossed in theyre online lives? I cant
believe how someone could do something that
drastic. There must have been other stuff
    going on. frown.gif

Actually the girl in question never existed. It had nothing to do with the virtual character.

Salon did a story on it.

Still intresting in that it's a hoax. Just for different reasons.

Actually I'm pretty sure some people here reading it will find it parallels another incident here.
