Did I do the right thing...?

In the FreeRoll on Saturday I played this hand,I am not sure if I did the right thing and I would like you guys to tell me what you would have done.

I have about 1800 chips in a good postion (one to the right of the button) but I am the short stack, some around the table have 5/6 times my chips.I am just wating to make a stand as the blinds are starting to eat me away.I get pocket 9s.Its 600 to call 4 players call...I dont no what to do as I put the 4 callers on over cards AK,AQ,KJ,QK,and if I call the 600 I am sure I will be made go all in by one of the big stacks.I am not good at working out the odds but the way I see it if anybody hits anything on the board I am going out the door early for a pint.

So I think about it for a few min....with 4 players are pocket 9s what I am looking for,is this the hand to make the stand...?After a few min I fold.Flop comes 4 4 9    I am in shock. Why did I not stay in..?Turn brings a rag (cant remember what it was as I am still looking at my house, sorry my folded house) river brings a Jack.A pair of Jacks takes the lot.

So how would you lot play this hand...?the way I see it is 9 times out of 10 I will not hit my 9 and I would have lost this hand, but it still hurts that I through away the winning hand for maybe the 4th time that night.I end up going out soon after this hand.

    You gamble, you no lose...

Short-stacked in the freeroll, there's a load of callers, you have a hand that you're willing to make a stand on? Push it all in! If you're right that they all have AK, KQ, QJ type hands then they are killing each others out.

Plus its the freeroll, you have to be willing to gamble to get to the final table.

And if you don't have any of them on a higher pair, you're ahead.

    Get it all in!

If you just call and a card higher than a 9 comes on the board (Not terribly unlikely! ;) ) then you can, far too easily, be scared away from the pot by someone whether they've actually hit it or not.

Two choices with mid pocket pairs. Limp and hope to hit a set (if you don't then expect to fold) or (depending on number of callers, your level of desperation, your read etc.) go all in. Of course if you do go all in, the last thing you want to see yourself up against is a higher pocket pair... (as I did in an SnG that day... My QQ, Vs KK Vs AA... Q on the flop, K on the river... Hard luck to the Aces, at least I got the side pot...)

    Just my thoughts anyway...

All in. If four players have called for 600 they probably have a lot of the same cards giving them less outs. Anyway, you will have to take a stand somewhere and this seems as good as any.

btw, the only other option was to fold (as you did) and if you thought that was the right decision then don't worry about the flop hitting as its immaterial.

    Ram Jam.

You have several ways to win here. They could all fold (remember the first guy who called is now looking at an All In and 3 callers to act behind him, the last guy to call didnt raise the first 3 out of it so he may be weak!), or one guy will call you and the others may well back off then and you end up heads up against AK...

9's are on the dead centre of the probabilities, you are as likely to see a flop with all cards 9 or under, as you are to see one with an over card (iirc). You're odds of hitting one on the flop are 1:8 by the way. What you REALLY want is to be up against one person with them and hope they miss (well duh! :)). If you call and put 600 into the pot its a weak move. You then *need* a flop below 9 and for noone to have a draw because your 1200 all in wont scare them away.

The question you need to ask yourself is: if you put 600 in and someone raised you would you call regardless. If the answer is yes then you should consider going all in to begin with to get the folding equity.

    DeV.
