Problem installing second hard disk!

    Hi, I'm having a problem getting my pc to recognise a second hard disk that I want to install in it.
    I'l try and give the spec of the pc as best I can;

    Abit KG7 motherboard with Athlon (thunderbird I think) 1.4Ghz. 512mb ram, 40gb Maxtor hard disk, CD-rom, floppy, Geforce 4 ti-4200 (64mb).

    The hard disk is formatted and just has XP and protools on it.
    The problem starts when I add the second disk (a western digital caviar 120gb). The Maxtor is set to Master (although it's hard to tell where that is by looking at the diagram provided on the disk!), and boots up fine on its own, and is recognised by the bios.
    When I connect the Western up and set it as slave, the pc boots up and then either;
    1) Hangs while searching for ide drives
    2) Gives me an invalid system disk error
    3) Recognises the western as the Primary IDE, even though it is set to slave, and doesnt recognise the Maxtor.

    I've tried every possible combination of selector "jumper" settings but none of them will work!

    Any help would be much appreciated, as I know this should be quite a basic procedure, and I'd prefer to be able to fix it myself rather than pay some guy in a PC store €40 for 10mins work!

    Thanks, Barry.

    Are the IDE cables colour coded?
    Grey and Blue?

    Do both harddrives have jumper switches on them? And are they both setup correctly?

    Also, some drives have been known to only work when in master mode, so that could be causing problems. I had your problem before, and the only solution was to put the new drive in as master, and old drive as slave. Then reinstall windows :(

    EDIT: THe reason i ask is that if your existing drive has no jumper on it, it may cause problems.

    Could also be a dodgy ide cable? Can you try a different cable and make sure that the primary and slave connectors on the cable are being connected to the primary and slave drives.
