The first thing i want to say i sorry for posting a thread that has probably been posted a million times, but i had a quick look there and cant see any new ones.

    I need a new PC.
It would be used for power heavy multimedia apps and games (HL2 ect)
    Budget: Probably about 1600.
I need a LCD Flat screen as i dont have room for a CRT.

I would love to build a PC. However, even though i know a fair amount about computers and their architecture, i dont feel too confident about sourcing and building the machine. Can you recommend parts? I know about the infamous Komplett.ie but i dont know what Power supplies/mb's/memory ect are compatible with each other.

One other thing...PC or MAC? Should i just get a mac?
Alienware are very expensive..are they really worth it?

Any help would be very welcome. Cheers, P.

    Build Build Build!

Alienware are excellent, if you can afford them. However, it is a total rip-off.

You should have no problem building your own machine if you managed to use the word architecture in the right context :D (unlike some people I know)

Macs are no good for games. Avoid.

People here will help you out. 1600 will get you quite an impressive beast, even with a TFT monitor.
Ok - Komplett are good, but sometimes www.overclockers.co.uk are better. You need to shop around a little.
I suggest you find the peripherals first, deduct their cost from your budget, and then decide on components.

To save repetition, I'll refer you to this thread as it has many links to basic pc building info and should answer a lot of what you need to know.
For my own part I would say that the 2 biggest advantages to building your own pc is no.1 you learn an awful lot about pcs in the process and no.2 you will almost certainly have a machine that is easier to upgrade in the future by changing parts, something which is less likely by going for a name brand pc like Dell, HP et al.

    as a starter - try Komplett.ie as they have a pc-builder page

very good for ideas and price ranges etc

    I just built a 3.2GH P4 /Abit IC7/1Gb/2*200Gb HD/cd-rom & dvd-burner.

faster than fast --now looking for a 19" monitor lcd
