Not sure if this is the right forum going by what's here already. Couldn't find anywhere more suitable. Either that or I'm blind.

I think my dentist plans to remove my last tooth on the top right hand side on Christmas Eve. Is this my eye tooth? The one at the very back.

It's kinda knackered anyway so I know it has to go, it's just that I don't want to be out of action for xmas dinner and that. A phew questions so:

    Anyone gotten that tooth out?
    Does it take long?
Does it hurt at all or does the local anaesthetic (sp?) take care of that?
What about when that wears off?
When the dentist pulls it, does she smash into your lower teeth when it comes free?
Is it worse than getting fillings?

Adults have up to 32 teeth - 8 each side top and bottom

Of the 8, (you have 4 of each of these)
    the first two are incisors,
then an incisor (fang), (eye teeth ?)
then two premolars, (two points each)
and then three molars - flat teeth at the back
the third one may come late and can be called wisdom teeth.

Better suited to PI or Afterhours,

neither this nor the other forums are medical ones - sites like www.vhi.ie might give more info there

No its not your eye tooth. Its either a molar or a wisdom tooth ( provided your's have descended).

i have had a molar taking out and thats it. The anaesthetic takes care of any pain. You will feel kinda fatigued after the procedure.

It should only last a few hours , nothing a good nights sleep couldn't take care of.

I think fillings are much worse. It's by no means pleasent but no way as bad as a filling.

You have 32 teeth the first two are the central and lateral incisors top and bottom. Then the canine or eye tooth. two premolars or bicuspids, and three molar teeth 1st 2nd and 3rd.

This forum is called Medicine\Biology so why is this not suited here?

Getting a tooth out is fine.
The anaesthetic takes all the pain away however you would feel some presure as the nerve ending that feel presure are not numbed as must as the pain ones. An upper wisdom tooth is a very easy tooth to take out most of the time ( the lower wisdom teeth are much harder and when people talk about difficult wisdom teeth it is usually the bottom ones...sure somebody will reply saying...I had a really difficult upper wisdom tooth taken out...yeah most of the time they are easy..also no dentist has ever put their foot an a chest or swung out of a tooth cause the forceps and elevators used woudl be at a mechanical disadvantage and you would get nowhere ok).
There will be tenderness afterward when the LA wears off...take a painkiller it will go after a day of two. Sometimes espically in smokers you get an infection afterwards however this is relativly uncommon.
Dont worry about getting teeth out...an abcess is far far far worse. However getting teeth out is not like being tickled by faries it is uncomfortable. Taking out a molar or upper wisdom tooth takes 5-10 minutes once the tooth is numb. Again lower implaced wisdom teeth take a lot longer. Sometime if the teeth are really badly broken down some of the bone around the tooth must be removed this again is relativly uncommon and only extend the time taken and not the post operative pain. Modern dentistry with properly given anaesthetic should not hurt.

What was the name of that dentist/priest in Italy who used to put the teeth in a box and had like a million of them when he retired..
