I bought a hp laptop there the other week and i am in the middle of setting up a network between the laptop and the desktop. i am using a network switch between the two devices. i have all the equipment setup cable ran, terminated with all the necessary but i am using win xp sp2 on both the laptop and desktop and for the life of me i cannot get them to communiate not even with a cross over cable will they communicate. i have disabled all firewalls etc., enabled all communication on both machines and cannot get them to communicate. i have spent the last two days trying so damn hard to get them to communicate. i have networking experience as i have setup the same in work only using windows 2000 pro all without a hitch at all. i would nearly format both machines at this stage and put on windows 2000 pro. has anyone any ideas as to how i can get the laptop and desktop to communicate?

ok heres an update! my desktop can now see my laptop but the laptop wont let me get in! im getting an error saying \\Laptop is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found! any ideas what to do!

Just a quick thought, did you check the file sharing and security setting for the folders you want to share?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

ya checked them! they are all ok!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

hmmm although you say the ping wont work, forget the last question.

    Ok, back to the start.

    1) Connect them via the crossover cable (doa visual inspection to make sure it IS a crossover cable, you should see two wires "crossed" over at the ends of the cable).

    2) Open the network control panel on each machine, and go into the TCP/IP settings of each machines' ethernet card.

    3) For your IP's use 195.168.0.1 and 195.168.0.2. Type in 255.255.0.0 for the subnet. This may/may not help, but its worth a shot using different numbers.

    4) Restart both PC's if needed ( i don't think you have to). Then on each machine go to start-> run, and type in "ping 195.168.0.1" and "ping 195.168.0.2". Just to make sure they can ping themselves and each other. If they can't ping themselves, you know its a driver/hardware issue.

    5) Assuming they can now ping each other, run the "network setup wizard" on both. Two or three pages into the wizard, you will be given a window with three choices on it. "This computer connects directly tothe internet...." "This computer connects through a residential gateway..." and other". Choose "other"! Then choose "This computer belongs to a network without internet". Its the last choice.

    6) Choose a unique computer name for each computer in the next screen, and make sure you choose teh SAME workgoup name. MSHOME will do fine. Then when you apply those settings and reboot, you should be able to access each computer via my network places.

Make sure windows internal firewall is off, and all other firewalls are off.

i have tried all that but i will give it one more go this evening when i finish work! its driving me F***N nuts! iv never had so much trouble setting up a network before! i have it all professionally set up with connection points on the walls and everything. i have all the cables made even a crossover cable to test it all out! the cables are correct as i have the q-tec 500ct cable tester!

no need to triple post :p

The fact that you can't ping the machines means it is NOT setup correctly. Which is why i want you to reset the IP address and subnet mask to alternative numbers.

Also try newer/different drivers if reseting the IP's doesn't help.

Sorry about the tripple post! just anxious to get it working before i go to england on christmas eve! i have setup loads of networks using windows 2000 pro and never had any problems like this! i have never ever networked windows xp pro machines before!

Try pinging 127.0.0.1 on each machine, this will confirm to some degree that the network components are working. If you get no response, remove all the network components and setup everything again.

Type ipconfig at the dos prompt to recheck your ip and subnet mask settings.

Check that both network cards are communicating at the same speed, either 10 or 100 MB and either half or full duplex, if these are set on auto they may not auto negotiate correctly and you'll be going around in circles...

Your second post mentioned that your laptop wasn't accessible from the workstation. Way around this is if you setup the same user and password on both machines and add this user to the shares your trying to connect to, think that was specifically a win2k talking to winXP problem though.

See if any of this helps, if not we'll try some other stuff.

OK i have done the above. i can get each of the machines to ping themselves, only the desktop will ping both machines! i can get the laptop to ping itself but it will not ping the desktop. all i get when i try to ping the desktop from the laptop is request timed out and all the usual stuff! any ideas as to what could be causing this?

It sounds like you have windows firewall enabled on your desktop, and its denying the pings coming from your laptop.

The fact you can ping the laptop correctly from the desktop means your setup is ok, theres some software thats causing the problem. Are you 100% sure that the firewall built into windows is disabled? Right click on the network connection in the "Network Connections" control panel, and click on properties. Then go to the advanced tab, and click on "settings" in the Firewall section. Make sure thats off.

Now, considaring you have the pings semi-working, you can try getting file sharing working with the "Network setup wizard" found in Accessories -> Communications.

Let me know how that works out.

If one machine can ping the other, but the other can't initiate a ping, then it sounds to me, to almost certainly be either a firewall issue, or one of the machines may possibly have two network interfaces with ips in the same subnet mask.

File & printer sharing is irrelevant, it works on a higher layer. Make certain that your firewall is disabled on both machines, or investigate allowing ICMP through the windows firewall, in the control panel.

Or, does the laptop have a wireless ethernet connection as well ? Try temporarily disabling this interface.

    Gav

ps. try the nets/comms forum in future

I had the exact same problem. Installed IPX on both laptop and desktop and all was fine. Don't ask me why.

I know its irrelevant... but my thinking is as follows. By default the windows firewall blocks pings, but i'm pretty sure that by default it allows windows networking connections. Meaning that he should be able to share folders through my network places even though he can't ping from the laptop to the main PC.

We know the hardware is setup right, as the main PC can ping the laptop.

ok lads just to bring ye up to speed on this. i have had fun with this this evening. i restored everyting back to defaults and worked from there. as i type this at the moment both machines can see each other using the crossover cable. only the desktop will access both itself and the laptop. the laptop will only access itself but not the desktop. it keeps saying \\Main is not accessibel. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. any ideas as to what to do?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

OK, you're at a good point now. I tihnk you've nearly got it working. For your laptop, try rightclicking on "main" (in my network places) and choosing "connect as" or "login as", and try the same username/password as is used on the "main" computer. That should allow connections to be made.

Or, after turning off simple file-sharing. Try to change the permissions on the "main" computer to allow "Everyone" full access.

how do you mean to to turn off simple file-sharing? what is simple file sharing? how do you change the permissions on the "main" computer to allow "Everyone" full access?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

Open up a directory (e.g c:) in explorer. Then click on Tools -> Folder options. Then go to the "view" tab in this window. Scroll down for "simple file sharing" and turn it off. Then, rightclick on your c: (as found in my computer) and choose "Sharing and Security" and in the security tab, give the group "Everyone" permission to read/write, and in the sharing tab, make a new share of the drive with the right permissions enabled there.

That should help. If not, i'm buggered if i know :p

Go to the laptop ... Then > control panel> add new user...the new user details should be the very same as the default user as the main pc... logon onto both machines again using the same user names...and hey presto your done ... a previous response will also work ... the one where someone said give everyone full control

    Happy Xmas
