I just got the Fujifilm FinePix E550 and its the mutts nutts. Cost in the USA is about $300 but this camera will last for life. Its small and fits in your pocket and is for starters and pros alike and you will not need to upgrade for some time to come. Its got a 6.3mp and has a 4x zoom. For this kind of cash its a great pice of Kit

    Hope it helps
    ;)

 Pro's do not use compact digicams. Pro's and hobbyists use (D)SLR's ((digital) single lens reflex) cameras. They are not pocket size however.

These start at around a grand for a comsumer grade Canon 300D/Nikon D70/Pentax *istDS etc - but if you want to stick with film they can be had for a fraction of digitals prices.

If you just want a small carry round consumer compact then...

1/ first decide on the maximum size you can tolerate - while you cannot as a rule equate digicam size with quality, the better units at then same price level tend to be larger (see Canon A85 vs Canon SD300, both current models, both same prices, but the A85 a better cam in terms of image quality - the SD300 (aka ixus 50(US), of ixy 40(jap)) is MUCH more pocketable though and you are therefore more lightly to carry it around with you.)

    2/ set a price point

3/ other features - waterproofness, 5x optical zoom etc, build quality etc.

4/ READ www.dpreview.com and www.steves-digicams.com for review of most current and past models!

I'd always have an SLR and a compact.
The SLR for hobby work, the compact for partys etc.
Me, my next camera is going to be a Canon SD300.
I have a Pentax Optio 555 - excellent image quality - 5MP, 5X optical zoom fantastic focus accuracy but it's slow focus peeves me. And I'm willing to sacrifice a little image quality for the fact the I will always have the camera to hand.

    or the p100.

i think 150 is a bit too expensive for my liking.
