Sports Crossword in the Irish Times

There's a crossword at the back of the sports section in the Irish Times today and I've never seen anything so difficult. There's a total of 127 clues and I'm finding it hard to get one. Clues like 36A: "Be quiet about fate of mammal.". Am I missing something here? There's 4 superb prizes and I'd be pretty sure if you complete it you'd have a very good chance of winning one of them.

Anyone want to let me in on something as I have to be missing something?

And you want us to provide you with the answers? A group of my buddies in work used to get 90%, give or take, each year, and then they'd ask me to help them finish it. We never did. :p

With 127 answers? I don't think so. Just wondering if anyone could answer any of them, never mind complete it. Anyway, 90% is certainly impressive.

Just pullin' your leg. Went out and bought it (IT) tonite, so thanks for the tipoff.

I'll have a look see, and if I get any I'll (consider) posting them.

    20:lithe
    125: gay o driscoll

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭errigal

Thanks for those - acutally Id managed to get all 3 of them.

Is 1 Down Aidan Okeeffe ? (as in Kerry legend Dan O Keeffe)

BTW watch your spelling of KierEn fallon...

    35 down is Barrack,

    42 across is Uber

10 down im not sure of (Large number wasted time in service (1.1.1) , what about 6 across (Veteran Keeper on unknown cricket side) (..F.) ?

I think 3down is trick but not 100% sure

    pro & con = trial????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭errigal

That was my original answer but...

24 across looks like Locker Room ???

    hi adef

Do you have 10 down ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 adef

    fraid not: r??
are you down to just this one?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭errigal

10 down is the only one Ive no idea about.

1 down im not sure about...

The rest Im fairly happy with...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 adef

yes, the only Aidan O'Keeffe I can find is the St Pats striker...
10d - lots of possibilities - rfu and rds are sports related but I don't get the clue

    3 Down
Could 3 Down be trial and 24 Across be Boiler Room?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭errigal

possibly BUT why boiler room ?

whats the connection with IT ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 citeog

You're right - 24 A has to be locker room - IT worker ( Irish Times Sports writer Tom Humphries & his column is called Locker Room)
    So 3 down is T?I?K

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭errigal

that was my deduction as well !

BTW did you go for EPO as the answer to 39A ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 citeog

yes - EPO oriental (eastern)= E flower (river) = PO

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭errigal

    cheers...

that leaves me pretty much down to 1 clue that Ive no idea for

10 down (I can see some logic to the answer RDS)

Suspect 3down is Trick but not sure.

Also 1 down Im not sure if its Aidan Okeeffe

If you need a hint with any of the others let me know

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

BTW, can someone give me one question and the answer to that question to see what kind of answers they were looking for?

    10d: d=large no.?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭errigal

    shels is right

    No idea about 10d...

D as large number would work... making RDS the likely answer but
    who knows.
