localhost on FireFox

Not sure this is in the right place, but however...

I just installed Firefox on my work PC, which I use for developing websites and such. I have Apache et al installed so that I can work on localhost. Now, when I start up IE, it lets me into localhost (as normal) but Firefox doesn't. It automatically brings up the dial up window (I don't want to connect) and after that, any attempts to reach localhost are met with connection refusal.

I tried making my connection 'never dial', but it still refuses to let me into localhost. IE works away fine.

    Anyone help?

try typing the local ip address 127.0.0.1 that may work

Nope, same problem with all the usual IP addresses. It's almost like it doesn't know that localhost is a local host (hey, is that where the name comes from?) There must be a setting somewhere to tell it not to bother with localhost, but being an FF newbe, I have no idea what to look for.

Also change the start page in Firefox to blank and if using a proxy check that that it's excluded for 127.0.0.1

while firefox is better at IP's than IE , make sure you are typing in http://127.0.0.1 or better still http://127.0.0.1:80 to be on the safe side.

Still no joy on this one. It's driving me spare. The only reason I have FF installed is because a client complained about the layout of their page in FF (it's fine in IE, but that's a lot more forgiving when it comes to unclosed tags). I can't fix the problem without being able to see the problem, and since that machine is not online, I have to transfer the files to this machine, then upload them and check out the changes I made. Not the speediest environment ever

Why am I telling you all this? Dunno.

It seems to be a fairly common problem: lot of posts over at MozillaZine, but with no replies unfortunately.

Internet control panel, never dial a connection ...if it is supposed to resolve locally .

what is the host header for the website ? , is it in etc/hosts ?

While doing yet another search online for this problem, came across somebody who had misconfigured their firewall. I use ZoneAlarm, but nothing has changed there, methinks. So I go to check the settings and find I'm not even running the blasted thing.

Fire it up, FF asks if it can access the internet and I'm done. Stoopid, although it's a little strange that I was being 'protected' while ZA was not even running. It's not a service, and if it was "somewhere" in the background, why wouldn't it ask me if FF can access the internet.

All very peculiar, but it's solved now. If anyone else has this sort of problem, there's the solution ;)
