i live in dublin and am interested in getting into some kind of martial art, ive been inspired recently by watching UFC and Pride videos and seeing the likes of royce gracie taking out guys twice his size with his grappling technique, is there anywhere in dublin where you can learn his style or a similar style? i think he uses his own modified form of jiu jitsu.....also would it be wise to start some training before i join somewhere? bit of running etc. cos im very unfit at the moment

any advice would be much appreciated

No aerobic or weight training is quite like rolling on the floor with another man who is better than you! ;)
Your best bet is get the Colms to give you directions to where they train and go to class! They won't kill you, much, you'll learn and have more fun than you thought! Your lucky to have such a choice of MA to train in really!
Just get to training and you will gain the fitness and strength for your sport!

Royce Gracie studied Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a ground fighting art that was developed by his family from Judo and traditional Jiu Jitsu. There are a bunch of good places to learn BJJ and also Ultimate Fighting aka MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in Dublin and it really depends on where you're living.

The most highly ranked BJJ person in Ireland is John Kavanagh who runs a full time gym in Harolds Cross. (www.sbgireland.com)

Colm O'Reilly, who posts here, runs a gym in Firhouse (www.twokingsmma.net) and also runs the UCD BJJ club (www.geocities.com/ucdbjj)!

There is also a club in Loughlinstown that Colm would have more info on and one or two other ATGs (Affiliated Training Groups!).

    Damo,

You're more than welcome to come down and start training with me at SBG anytime.

Classes in UCD have finished up for the year but will start again on Tuesday, Jan 4th 2005

Two Kings MMA will be training this week, Mondays & Wednesdays 7.30-9.00 and then starting again on Wednesday, Jan 5th 2005.

As far as conditioning goes it's always good to do some work outside of classes. My advice is to begin with just start to run, skip, do some push ups and sit ups. Get some general fitness and then start developing sports specific (if you want to).

If you've any questions feel free to fire away here, email me at colm@twokingsmma.net or call me on 086-8151092.

Take Care, and if I don't see you, have a happy holidays
    Colm

    Stephen,

You've proved you have absolutely no clue as to regards grappling, MMA or BJJ. So stop trying to challenge the most accomplished jitz practioner in Ireland (JK) and the best -65Kg fighter in Ireland (2KM). Not to mention you're obvious insercurities displayed on other forums.

If you feel I'm incorrectly judging you maybe you should challenge me aswell.

Take a long look in the mirror.
    Colm

 WTF? I didn't challenge anyone, i was just curious about JK. Take a chill-pill brother! I have no intention of challenging anyone. I only do martial arts for fun.

    StephenInsane,

throughout your dealings on boards.ie you consistently brag about every facet of your life. You compare yourself to BJ Penn(jokigly or otherwise), talk about your MMA skills (with seemingly no knowledge of the sport outside of lurking on Sherdog and TUF) and then challege TwoKingMick to an MMA "superfight" (in which he undoubtedly would hand you your ass). Grow up and go train some MMA and figure things out for yourself. People who train and fight MMA arent impressed by all the talk! Notice the real fighters dont brag...

can i just say. for the record. a big lol aimed at this thread and this whole self defense / ma board. it seemed to start off as teenage boys( and a few girls) talking about their kyu grades, then escaleted to a online shrine to colm o reilly now it seems to be about bad mouthing stepheninsane and making informal "challenges".

so can i just request, like i mentioned before that we all settle this the old fashioned way. on the mat. it can be like a handicap match. stephen insane can fight normally, colm o reilly will have an arm behind his back and i'll have ak47 to make things fair. so firhouse at 7 christmas eve. colomk and clive can referree. up for that????

Hmm? are you with me or with Colm O'Reilly in this "handicap match". If you're with me, i whole heartedly accept. You'd need an AK to stop one of these bad tempered agro BJJ boarders.

i was thinking of taking you both out. although maybe i should do some hari kiri 21st century style for the benefit of boards.

LOL, I'd love a shrine, but I doubt it would be good for my ego.

As for "challenges" I was thinking of this earlier on, in the ma community that I hang round in we ask people to roll, wrestle and spar all the time and no big deal is made of it. We're just interested in learning and training together. Yet it seems that when I invite people out to train with me, to see if they've something to offer, on boards its taken as a challenge match. It's not.

Two Kings will be having its last training session of 2004 on wednesday, 22nd December. All welcome

    Peace Out,
    Colm

Hows about I cover the whole deal from a rooftop 600 yards away through the scope of a Steyr .270Winchester. It's a fight ender! :D

Firstly Stephen Insane started by coming onto the SD board and claiming he had an impressive fight record.

    (reminder the first: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2154760&postcount=22 )

He then proceeded to ask hint that he was a well known fighter and people would be impressed if they knew his real life identity. Even going as far as to suggest a "superfight" match up. Certainly doesn't have any self confidence issues.

    (reminder the second: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2194879&postcount=11)

He then made several posts asking detailed questions about other posters while simultaenously boasting of his own achievements and refusing to divulge any personal details to verify his tales.

Secondly you try to berate the forum by trivialising it and insinuating it's mostly used by teenagers... wait aren't you like 20? Not too far off - still retaining some of that puberty anger I see.

If you don't like the board don't post here. As for the StephenInsane issue.. interesting to note he's also looking for help with his exams next year. I believe he's sitting the leaving cert (in between UFC cage matches one can only assume)

It was the 3rd of May this year. Left the old study a bit late eh?

So are you up late studying?
Repeating this year hoping to better your points?
Less grappling and more application to your studies, you can be a UFC Champ when your in your Twenties you know!
Good luck with the papers this year!

    firstly "logic"
Secondly you try to berate the forum by trivialising it and insinuating it's mostly used by teenagers... wait aren't you like 20? Not too far off - still retaining some of that puberty anger I see.

that didnt actually make any sense.
berate: To rebuke or scold angrily and at length.
trivialising: To make or cause to appear trivial
insinuating:To introduce or otherwise convey (a thought, for example) gradually and insidiously.

courtesy of dictionary.com but i think i know what you meant.

    Secondly "logic"
i can post how ever i please on the content of this forum because it is public and inappropriate posts i make can be edited by moderators. i don't aim to make remarks about the character of people on this forum i just remark on the content of their posts ( that was almost mlk paraphrasing!).

    thirdly,

i mentioned earlier that my intention was not to trivialise this forum. however, it proved to be difficult not to poke light hearted fun at people who post in such a forum. by this i mean, i think we can all agree that what's written here is hardly serious.

however if this isn't the consensus of the board and i should either start been more serious or discontinue posting here let me know and i'll gladly disregard you opinion (joke).

so back to serious matters, christmas eve 7pm stepheninsane vs colm o reilly with special guest referee chuck norris and kevin_rc_ie vs logic1 with special guest referee mike tyson. (with my usual handicap match rules)

"If one were to say in a word what the condition of being a samurai is, its basis lies first in seriously devoting one's body and soul to his master. And if one is asked what to do beyond this, it would be to fit oneself inwardly with intelligence, humanity and courage"

ps the tap thing was funny

    Are you mad?

You must be huge! or insane!

I'd love to watch though!

well the internet in general is futile and pointless.

as a great man once said....

"arguing on the internet is like the special olympics. even if you win you are still retarded."

i rest my case. the comedy factor in this thread is great though.

Thats why I just don't argue!(just messing ;) ) Think a mod needs to lock this thread before StephanInsane's feelings get hurt even more :p
