Title says it all, I'm just starting guitar, and I want to learn some songs. But I find tabs sites daunting, and was wondering if anyone could recommend some easier songs to start with

    Hope this is the right forum ^^;

Try to learn a some different styles like rock, fingerpicking etc... seven nation is a good place to start and smells like teen spirit. I would suggest learning some open string chords (a,d,e,g,b,f, etc.) then minors rather than just playing tabs to begin with. when you have them pretty good you can play a load of songs. After all of that, learn the "a" and "e" barre chord shapes, power chords and progress to learn some scale shapes like pentatonics, major and minor. When you have all of this done... youre ready to start gettin the women and thrashin the hotel rooms! :D

    Good luck Aonghus,

if you're really stuck and find tab daunting try www.olga.net and there you can get tab or chords to tunes. handy place to start off and at least you'll be picking the tunes you want to learn because if you dont like what you're playing you wont practice and thats all you'll need man is practice. a good place to start learning rhythm is anything by oasis, it's all piss easy and you can always break them out at a drunken singalong cause everyone knows the tunes. when you get better learn some stones etc....not too difficult.
anyway, good luck with the playin and if you need to know anythin man pm me here and i'll see if i could help.

Best thing to do to start is learn Amaj&min D Maj&min E Maj&min F Maj Gmaj and C maj in 1st position meaning around the 1st 3 frets.

Alot of tunes have very simple progressions.
Greenday - Time of your life for example consists of Gmaj Cmaj Dmaj and Emin.

Alot of tunes follow this formula using the 1st 4th and 5th chord in relation to the key of G.

    Try learnin:

    Wonderwall
    Brown Eyed Girl
    Whiskey in the Jar etc...

I wouldn't be into them tunes myself but they're good to start off with.

The whole Oasis back catalogue is pretty easy. You're best picking something you like, and getting yourself the band's chordbook.

You're best off trying to play songs that you like. Print off a rake of tabs, it doesn't matter whether they look hard, or not. Then just try and play them. It's easier if you have the song to listen to aswell. The first song I learned fully was Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.

Once you start playing even bits of songs, your confidence will grow, so you'll want to start playing more, and then it just gets easier.

Radiohead- Street Spirit for fingerpicking and Karma Police for a nice easy strumming song.

Are you learning on acoustic or electric btw?

Woah, thanks a lot guys, should be enough here to keep me going through the holidays

I'm learning acousitc, as I don't want to invest in a guitar yet, and there's one in my house already

Good, always learn on acoustic first. It's easy enough to progress onto electric from there, but the number of people I know who started on electric and never got the hang of an acoustic is just astounding...

For a really nice, pretty easy neo-classical type piece, finger picked, have a listen to the intro of Blackstar by Yngwie Malmsteen.

Most people who would be interested in guitar as opposed to playing slipknot riffs with heavy distortion would start on acoustic.

"Every rose has it's thorn......", by Poison.
Whole song is comprised of 4 chords, 1 of which is used only twice.

Isn't the intro to that song full of harmonics? Or maybe I'm thinking of another one..

Anyway for the OP - a lot of nirvanas songs are easy to play and just use the basic chords A, C, D, E, G, etc

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

It has about 6 or 8 harmonics at the end of the intro. He has another identical song called Farewell where he has more harmonics.

cheese fest! I know Raph and a guy we know uses that as a pick up line thingy so I strongly advice NOT learning that! It is easy though!
