Generally is a 16ms response time on flat panels suitable for gaming?

Pixmania have a Belinea 17" - here for E281, anyone have opinions on this?

Or: recommend me a budget flat panel with half decent performance....

    Cheers

If you are a big gamer dont go for a flat panel

There fine tbh im useing one right now with a 16ms response time i play vietnam hl2 rome total war etc on it with no problems however be aware that these things dont do shades of black to well (or maybe thats just mine)

Space is an issue, my CRT takes up >50 % of my wee computer desk and a flat panel would be a nice space saver.

Apart from getting one with decent reso. and good response time are there any gotchas?

Generalisation. People post this without backing it up all the time. You're basing this on technology from years ago. CRTs might be a little bit better for games, but this whole "TFTs are no good for games" statement is balony.

The lower the response time the better, bringitdown. I have a 12ms 19" TFT and it's grand for games. Check reviews for the specific models you're looking at, in particular on techie/games websites, as it should cover games and video which would be where smearing/blurring is apparant.

DEFINITELY get one with DVI input. VGA often won't look great, particularly in games. As long as your graphics card has DVI output you should definitely get that.

Cheers koneko, thats what I needed to know...

If you need any specifics, pm me any time. http://www.hardforum.com (although, it is down at the moment) has a board for Displays, there's usually a lot of user experience posts there for specific screens, and most people there are into their games so it's a good first stop (besides Google).

A good 16ms panel will suffer no ghosting.

    complete crap.

ive read all the monitors out now rated at 8ms, 8ms is their best response time not the average, and they rate as high as 25ms at times. whereas the 12ms upwards ones are the average rating. i also have a 12ms 19" and second konekos recommendation. its a fantastic beast,

new 17" TFT 16ms, works great on all games for me... and 450:1 contrast ratio alleviates most (if not all) problems ppl have with colour and depth reproduction on TFTs.

and its a budget one! n birds, 1 stone.

And I suppose you've tried the likes of 172v(16ms), viewsonic vx912b(12ms) and HIQ L90D+(8ms)?

Whats your definition of a TFT being "not good enough" for gaming? Its like saying you wont be able to watch a film unless ya have a Home Theatre System.

Skywalker, you need to back up your earlier statement with a datasheet or a review by a very credible website. As for WillieDH, ya cant discredit anyone's statement without a good reason or, better, PROOF.

im sure theyre fine for single play games... but, anyone play much counter strike online with a <16ms tft?

any issues? even minor noticable difference?

these things cost too much for just space saving

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

I have, its fine. Doom3 and Fry Cry look class on it too. (Need a stronger GFX card for Doom3 though:))

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭neokenzo

My TFT has a 16ms responce time and its great playing Far Cry and Counter Strike online. No problems at all.
