Sky Installation put back by 2 months

Sky was suppose to come yesterday and install digital multiroom into my house yesterday. I got the custom phone call at 9 yesterday morning telling me that they would be there at 1 to install. I sat at home all day yesterday waiting for them to come. At 6 yesterday eveing they rang me and told me that they would not be coming and that I should ring sky to make another installation booking. I was told I would be giving a priority booking next week.
When I rang sky they told me the earliest I would be now able to get installed would be mid feburary.

This is a complete joke. They were quick enough to take €159 out of my credit card when I booked it. When I booked it at the start of november the sales rep told me I would havi it in plenty of time for xmas. Which was a main factor in me getting them in.

Has anybody else had the same problem with sky? Is there anything I can do now? I am thinking of cancelling my order and going with chorus. At least with them I might get some sort of service. It does not look like i will have any channels for the xmas now

Big paddy, if you work for Serria, May I say one thing about them. They are the greatest shower of c***s going.

My Sister in law was supposed to have Sky+ installed last tuesday. She booked and paid for it back in Nov. So anyway she organised a day off work and waited in on Tuesday. She received a call early in the day as far as I know. Something to the effect of he would call in the evening. Well the evening came and went and no sign.
On wed she got in touch with Sky and they gave her Serria's number. They told her that there was nothing that they could do for her. She rang serria and was told something like " We tried on 3 occasions to call you and after the third attempt they say that they are then entitled to scrap the job" This was a clear lie as she did not leave the house once.

Now She has be given a date in Jan or possibly Feb and she is seriously thinking of cancelling Sky altogether. By the way not only was she getting Sky+ but she was also getting the mirrow sub.

If Sky are happy to leave a company like this handle their installations here in Ireland, they will soon start to lose customers if Serria continue to carry on like this.

    Hi Leonard,
Sky are greedy... and there is no doubting that. Let me tell you the big problem which has occured in the past 6 week's(approx). Prior to that, it has been reasonably comfortable, with each installer given about 8 jobs a day which he/she can handle. You see Sierra do not schedule the jobs, it is the Sky Centre in Livingston. Each county in Ireland is has it's own installer, apart from Laois & Offaly which has several, and everytime someone books a call from a specific county, the call is pre booked by a computer in Sky. Up to recently it has been between 4 and 8 calls a day for each installer. So up to the christmas rush, sky in their inteligence has allowed the computer's in Sky to book an average of 18 calls per day, per installer!. Nothing we can do about this, they are the Bosses, we are the indian's. We are now left in a delima where every customer has to be pre called by the installer, even though the vast majority of them are not going to be done, and then in the evening, the remainder have to be called back once again in the evening to tell them to reschedule with Sky. So what do you do? :(

I appreciate you honesty. Thanks for your explanation.

@ 8 jobs a day the installers are making nice money per week all the same. I know of a company down in cork who are paying €40 per install, dont know what Sierra pay but at 40 a job and about 8 a day, that adds up to over 1500euro per week. Nice money if you can get it

Honestly Leonard i really dont know how anyone can do 8 installs a day and not have quality suffer. At this time of year there is little enough light int eh day plus the fact that you are going to lose days to the weather. IMO paying €40 per install is way too little for a quality job.

Big paddy I sympathise with your situation sky are really clueless

When Paddy mentioned 8 jobs a day I thought the same. A friend of me was recently offered a job as an installer for a cork based company, looking after the Waterford/Wexford area. He would be paid €40 per install and was told that he could do as many as he wanted or was physically able to do per day. He subsequently turned it down for the reasons which you pointed out. He maintained that to do a quality install, you would want alot more that what he was offering and there was no way he would get any more than four or five quality jobs a day.

bigpaddy2004, thanks for the insight. I can see now why so many Sky "inhouse" jobs are so quick with no time put into it! I was considering a job with an operation in NI who did the same sort of work as Sierra, though I'm now glad I turned it down (that and the fact that the guy wouldn't directly discuss wages!) :)

When I mentioned 8 jobs a day, not all were installations the remainder service calls, 5 say would of been installations. But in saying that there is no reason for an installer not to be able to employ a labour with the amount of work provided. Every telecom's business is the same, "get in, and get out". Just for all your interest, I have just been handed an engineers workload for tomorrow. It includes....8 Sky plus installations with extra box, 3 standard installs & 1 extrabox installation. It would take nearly a day to do just 3 Sky Plus installations with extrabox alone.....Tony im sure you'll agree?

P.S. Leonard, you would'nt be talking about dmc would you? :D

Well to be honest Leonard, alot of the problems with installers is that they seem to think that they can rise out of the bed around 9 or 10, and finish up at 5 in the evening. This is because in this business, installers do not have a boss to look over them from time to time. They are all classed as sub contractors, in essence there own boss. Doing those hours everyday is not a full days work. I get paid the same as any other installer, im up at 6 home every night about 8-9 pm with all installations done as they should be. With no quality lost. This is because i have plenty of time to do them in. Alot of the installers are not custom to being there own boss, and so there ability to sustain themselves deteriourates.....rapidly. You have to agree, we all need someone to stand over us from time to time!!

Good points made there Paddy. I am glad that you have standards set for yourself, but as you pointed out, there are far too many out there that dont give a ****e. As far as they are concerned they just want to get in and get out. I have come across far too many of these cowboys on my travels.

So back to the original topic, is there anything you can do for my sister in law.

I cant see how you could do 3 sky+ and extra boxes in a day. What if you get an awkward job?

If we are able to do it, we will do it and most of the time this means cancelling down other jobs to make do.

Leonard I am sending you a PM with my number, have your sister in law ring me before 11 am tomorrow with her job number, and i will do my best for her. :)
