Why do I have to power on twice???

Just put together a new system.

Strangly, when I hit the power button, it goes through the 'sounds' of powering up (fans come on), but the monitor doesn't kicj in, and the HDD light doesn't light. To rectify, I have to power off, and then power on again and it's fine.

Is there a setting somewhere causing this.

A friend assembled a similar system and has the same problem, whcih leads me to think its a BIOS setting or someting.

If its any help, the specs are

    Abit IC-7 with a P4 3.2G in a Chieftec case.

    Appreciate any help

Is everything secure? No power leads are loose, RAM is sitting propery, all cards secured, etc? Just the first thing that springs to mind...

Does this happen every single time you try and start the computer up after its been off? Or does it only happen if its been off for a long time? Or does it only happen sometimes.

Tis quite strange. The first thing i'd think of is that it IS booting correctly, but the graphics card isn't always enabling, so you see no post messages etc.

it's happening for all initial startups. I've had to restart after installing various software, and it seem to be restarting ok most of the time. IT's just the initial startup. It's strange that its happening on 2 systems.

SNother diff betwenn the 1st and 2nd startup is that I get a system beep and the hard drive kicks in on the 2nd boot??? Very strange..

I'd be inclined to try downloading an updated bios, given that your friend has the exact same problem it's quite possibly a known bug. I think I remember seeing something like this before, and my first impression is that it was something to do with power management. If you can, in your BIOS try disabling as much power management/ACPI and 'wake on' stuff as you can. Also some bioses allow you to change the behaviour of the power button from the modern 'pressing shuts down windows, holding for 5 seconds powers off' to the traditional 'on/off no matter what's running', try that too if you can.

The first thing I'd recommend is to try a more powerful PSU ... your current one may not have enough juice to boot the first time around, and is only getting the lower-powered components their life-blood. The second time around it has less of a strain on it as it only has the higher powered ones to power.

    *shrug* :)

Yeah, BIOS upgrade/reflash is about your best bet. I had the exact same problem with an Abit board which was solved by a reflash.
