Hi I am trying to decide on which Canon Ixus 5mp camera to buy:

In the red corner: Ixus 500
In the blue corner: Ixus i5

Quality of photos would be my only criteria. Any views please.

I'm not sure where you plan to shoot but for a general purpose cam (holidays, portraits, parties, etc) go with the 500. The smaller i5 has a fixed lens which will limit your flexibility with compositions. The bigger Ixus is sure to have far more creative modes where the smaller one will be very much a basic P&S. In fact the i5 looks to be very much Canon's take on the fashion/party cameras that Olympus and Sony have released as late - fashion colours, small form factor, etc whereas the normal Ixus has a great history of being small while still taking fantastic photos.

I know you're choosing between those two but if you're keen to explore photography a bit more I'd urge you to go for the slightly larger S range. The S50 or S60 has full manual control which means proper M, AV and TV modes. I've been using an S50 for a few years as a backup to SLR and its great though not as pocketable as the Ixus models.

If you where willing to go to €499.95 euro lots of places are selling the Fujifilm S7000 which has 6X Optical zoom 35-210mm & Super CCD Pixel Technology, this type of camera will give you a lot of options, and good picture quaility alhtough I can't vouch personally although I'm picking up a Nikon Coolpix 8800 in a few days which has a 10x zoom VR technology and an 8 megapixel image.

    Reviews are here:

Just one of the camera shops in Dublin selling the s7000 for that price:

Hey ppl, i'm in a similar dilemma myself. Which of these would be the better buy, or can you suggest something else.

My preffered specs would be a 4 MP, digital camera, with XD card capability, and movie and sound capture. I know i'm not going to get cinema quality movies here, but any advice for a decent camera with good movie capture capabilities. I only want the camera for regular pix now, holidays, birthdays, special occassions, down the pub with the mates.
I have a budget of 250, with the possibility of an Xtra 120 from my sister. Kind of thinking of it as a present for the folks that we will prolly end up using more anyway.

    I've been looking @ the following 3.

    Sony Cybershot P43-4
    Polaroid PDC4355
    FUJI Finepix A340

All seemingly good value in Argos, so opinions please. I aint set on any of these. You give me a better option i will gladly cease it. BTW i'd rather not buy off the net so, i'd be purchasing the camera in the Dublin, Meath area.

    Thanx in advance
