I'm going backpacking around Italy in a couple of weeks, and I just wondered if anyone had any good recommendations for places to stay, things to see etc. I'm not wanting to do anything religious though.
I'm going to Rome, and then probably Florence and Venice.

Any suggestions would be very welcome smile.gif

    Cheers smile.gif

Even if you don't like football which I don't, make an effort to see a local match.

I got to see Inter vs. AC Milan in the San Siro in Milan and it was unbelievable ... less for the football than the fireworks, atmosphere etc.

Make an effort to see the old town of Roma it's very nice (though the city as a whole is a bit run-down imo).

If you want good walking spots try to pass through Perugia. It's quiet but nice.

If you want some sports .. Lake Garda is fantastic for a lot of watersports .. especially Windsurfing.

As for places to stay . .no idea. I always stayed with various Italians i know.

Nice place though .. you'll enjoy it.

    mmm Rome...

    1. Get a pair of shades...
    2. Get a pair of shorts...
    3. Sit down...get a glass of chianti with some crushed ice in it and then periodically pick your tongue up off the pavement and give it a good clean...

    ooohhhhh thems some fine women...
..and if perchance one fine italian woman comes over to you....don't listen to her speak unless to plan to become instantly infatuated....speak to me baby...

    things to see in rome?

...? Old appian way...catacombs...FOOD....ffs ...Italians .plan is to get up not too early...have breakfast...go out for lunch...have a snack...go out for dinner...

See the Vatican Museum....absolutely MIND-BLOWING....especially the tapestry room...the slaughter of the innocents...etc..
A truly amazing place and you will need the best part of a DAY to see it all.. of course the cistine chapel is part of the museum too...but not the most awesome part IMHO...

Loads of squares to sit and look...or read or whatever...Lovely side of town is near the cathederal of Santa Maria in Trastevere...this place is gorgeous at night especially....

Old chariot racing track...Parco del Circo Massimo...where some of Ben Hur was filmed...

Mouth of truth... Bocca del Veritas? cant think of the film.../ Katherine Hepburn? and Cary Grant? ...maybe I dunno....

Underground and bus and tram tickets are cheap and handy too...

if ya go shoppin near the spanish stems...bring your Visa Gold Card...

    kickin squeelin Gucci Little piggy...

    oops just spotted this....
Never mind....if you go to rome, You MUST see the vatican...most of the museum isn't religious even....AFAIK, it houses one of the largest collections of egyptian artifacts outside of ...well...egypt?

Anyway...you will be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the place...rooms painted by rafaello, michalangelo (spelling, you uncultured gimp)...,cascarino ...well maybe not him...And nary a priest in sight mostly...

    /me is sleepy
