    iPod?
    Digital Camera?
    DVD recorder?
Some other generic electronic must-have item that the big retailers seem hellbent on having all of us own this 25th of December?

Oh and socks. Can never go wrong with a pair of socks...

Socks? Are socks a special treat for some people? I don't get it.

More so the stereotypical comedic response that seems to do the rounds at xmas; ie. everyone ends up getting socks from old auntie Maureen or whoever.
Perhaps it's just an urban myth and everyone gets exciting stuff like Shower gel/Deoderant giftsets or boxes of biscuits...

My parents used to always enjoy a family meal out with my brother and I - we would try and contribute towards mum getting something in the January sales also and let dad relax while she shopped :)

Look at what your parents like, and get them that sort of thing; but be careful - don't buy your mother a cookery book even if she likes cooking ("what do you think I am, a slave to the cooker?")

Nice - *really* nice - scarves often go down well; Cleo's in Kildare Street often has gorgeous ones. I also like ones I've seen on people, with one colour on one side and another on the other, but I haven't seen them for sale anywhere.

Slippers, yeah, if the parents are newfangled types who wear slippers whenever they're in the house - M&S have really nice slippers for both sexes. Roches had beautiful ones, but seem to have run a bit short lately.

Nice jewellery always goes down well - it doesn't have to be expensive, just to be the kind of thing s/he wears and likes, for instance beaten silver stuff off a stall can be good without being dear.

Books, DVDs, films; if the parents haven't got a DVD player it might be worth going in on one with other family members - they're only around €50 in Argos. And they're a gift that keep on giving; every time they put on a DVD they'll think of you.

Smellies can be good, but they can also be dear; if you can get aftershave balm in the same scent the da likes in his bath, or bath salts in the same scent he likes in his aftershave, you're safe enough.

Art shops have beautiful little boxes with an inkstone and brush for Chinese calligraphy; not dear, and a great present for anyone who likes to draw.

A photo album (with a photo of their darling son/daughter who's given them the album on the first page, and an inscription to the darling parent who's the recipient under that - "To Dad on Christmas 2004, with love from Murgatroyd") should go down well.

Filofaxes and their knock-off versions are brilliant for anyone who has a life that takes some organising. Get the kind with a page for each day.

If you're rich, get (or go in with others to get) a GPS system for the car - fantastic present. Oooh, I want one! The kind that talk you through a journey, telling you where to turn and how far to go along.

Beautiful boxes - brilliant for keeping jewellery in. Put a little piece of jewellery in too (stall stuff, just as a thought - Celtic ring for a fiver, say).

Book stands for people who like to read at the breakfast table.

Tray with legs for those who like to have breakfast or a cuppa in bed - Dunnes usually have very good ones for €15.

Cushions - Dunnes, Penney's and Guiney's all have good cushions. You can just buy the cover, or buy the whole cushion, usually.

Dressing gowns - M&S have luxurious velvety ones for men; the women's ones are in icky colours, but the small size in the men's fit women, and they have some beautiful colurs - nice stripey ones, especially.

Oh, and if your parents are ould, Hall's Pictorial Weekly (series that was on the the 1960s or so) is now on DVD. Very funny if you lived through those dark days, with one character called the Minister for Want. If they're younger, you might buy them Father Ted.

Got my dad the complete series 1-7 DVD boxset of Only Fools and Horses.

Havnt got a clue what to get my mother... she doesnt drink, is allergic to most perfumes/beauty products, is a very picky eater (so restaurant is out of the question) and she hates crowds so a concert/theatre ticket is a bit of a no-no, also she doesnt read books.

I usually get her a voucher for Roches but i really want to get her something with meaning this year>.

I was thinking maybe a voucher for a place that does accupuncture or some form of natural healing.

    either:
    a power screwdriver.
    or
there's an add on for this thing that beeps when it senses a pipe behind a wall and it also 'paints' a straight laser either side to let you mark where you wanna stick nails or screws in the walls. - just got the house done up recently so they are hanging **** like there's no tomorrow.
