    From here
I need a new gfx card and 9800pro's are sold out :( The 6600gt from reviews seems to be in the same league as the 9800pro and at around €200 its sounds good.
As far as i can tell its agp, pny site doesn't have it listed, which is what i need.
Just wondering has anyone ever used any pny products (gfx mainly) what are they like? Good, bad ok.

That's the slow version of the 9800 Pro with the 128bit memory, hence the low price (cos nobody wants 'em).
6600GT would have that card for breakfast, so you aren't really saving by getting that.

Edit: I had a PNY Verto Ti4600, a great little card, that is until I gave a loan of it to one of my friends and the idiot killed it.... grrr...
Looking through the Anandtech article linked above it would seem that there are many of the 6600GT cards whose cooling solutions are not done very well. The heatsink tends to lift off the gpu resulting in poor cooling on several (see the article for more info) Anandtech give the most praise overall to the Leadtek version of 6600GT

The only reason im sticking with jes is cause they are giving me refund for a 9800pro that died on me, may be able to swap for 6600gt.
E-mailed them earlier today about a swap with the 6600gt.
They offered a swap with the power color, for some reason i knew it was nt a good a card as the sapphire. Guess i was right looing at duridian post.
Ill have a look at that article later on.
Thanks for the posts keep them coming.

The Sapphire 9800 Pro with 256bit memory is €213.99 at present by Jes, quite a price difference to the 128bit 9800Pro. :)
Of course all of this is dependent on your original 9800 having been 256bit. ;) Sapphire also produced a certain amount of 128bit 9800 Pro cards, though the vast majority of Sapphs seem to be 256bit. Going by the value of the 256bit Sapphire I'd say you should pay the difference and get a 6600GT, which although it is a card with a 128bit memory interface, is faster than 256bit 9800Pro due to other factors - 33 million more transistors, higher clocks, GDDR3 rather than DDR, pixel shader 3.0 support etc.

Tis an honest mistake, an awful lot of people get caught out with the lower performing 128bit cards. If right was right these cards should have been marketed as something other than 9800Pro but because they have a 9800 core at 380Mhz they can get away with calling it a "Pro" even though it is matched to what is basically slower ram than a 9800 non-pro would have.

I had a 256bit sapphire 9800pro but it died on me
I would get another but they arent in stock anywhere
So what about the pny 6600gt, is it still available cause its just not as good as the rest like the powercolor 9800pro or is it a coincidence?

After doing some deeper research, I am afraid I have to go against my initial instinct and give the thumbs down to the PNY 6600GT. It seems they have not given the best offering in this model :(
Finding a picture of the actual card itself online has proved impossible, all I can find is pics of the box. Therefore I have no idea as to what the heatsink and fan on the card looks like. However it is on the clockspeed of the card that I am giving this the "no" vote!
Here's a discussion on the clock speeds at Firing Squad's website
Here's the specs of the card according to PNY Europe
Here for comparison is the Leadtek equivalent's specs
So it appears correct that the PNY 6600GT is clocked at 450 on both the core and the ram (DDR 900) whereas the Leadtek is at the Nvidia specified 500/500 (DDR 1000)
I use this as my reference source for graphics cards default specs.
If I were you I would hang on a bit longer and try to get the Leadtek if possible. It's the same price as the PNY by JES but is not yet in stock so it may be after xmas before you get it, but I think it worth the wait.

Edit: It would appear that the Club3d 6600GT on JES also has the memory clocked down to 450 though the core is 500. This card however is about €20 cheaper than the average.

Duridian, Big thanks for doing some research.
Like you i have yet to find apic of a pny gfx, only see boxes.
Great source that chipset spec page , just found out my old gf4ti4200 is better than this (borrowed) fx5200 but i knew that already.
I was going to wait till after xmass anyway, just taught if that pny is any good i might as jes for a swao with it rather than money back but ill go for money back i think.
    Everyone thanks for you replies.

Good choice of card. I think you should uninstall all Nvidia drivers that are presently on your system before removing the current graphics card. when you have done this (and windows is probably whinging about your desktop being set to a very low resolution) then power off and switch cards(don't forget to pull the power plug out of the wall socket so that your machine is 100% off). After restart install whatever are the most recent Nvidia drivers you have. (The ones on driver disc that comes with the card are rarely the most recent so maybe download the newest ones before you go changing anything)

Windows wont be the only one whining about the low res then :)
Was thinking of doing it that way.
Lets hope it lives up to my expectasions, better than my current borrowed fx5200 My 9800pro died :(
