Getting PC parts as a "Gift"

    hi

    i heard somewhere that if someone sends you a "gift" from the US you are allowed a certain amount (think it was around €250) exempt from VAT and duty.....anyone know anything about this?? :confused:

    I've heard that before but I've recieved 2 -3 packages marked as gifts and they all got caught for customs. :(

    i've got one in customs at dublin airport...been there for 4 days now...still haven't been contacted....Fed-Ex keep tellin me they don't know why its stopped...on there tracking system it says -->

    AFAIK a 'gift' parcel is liable for VAT/duty if its value (including postage!) is over approx €45.

    The rules seem to be different for bringing goods back in person from the States. On the news last week, they were reporting that customs at Dublin airport permit an allowance of 175 euros per person above which you had to declare what you were carrying. I wonder why this rate is different for parcels ?
