What should I do with my old comp

Having recently splurged on a top o' the line new PC, I have a rather old Gateway basically acting as a door block. It's got a decent enough video card, 64megs of RAM, 3 hard drives totally c70m, but it's so friggin old, it's worthless to man or beast.

I'm thinking of cannibalising what I can (I assume HD and RAM are fairly standard from brand PC to brand PC) and dumping the rest at a nearby halting site (joke! travellers are our friends), what with the price of newer, better PCs these days.

Anyone got a better plan? I have absolutely no reason to keep it.

I was in a similar situation some time ago - and ended up slapping Redhat 9 on it, and leaving it serve MP3's and files over the network. It also works as a handy stopgap if I need to get files from my own computer when i'm in college.

Add to that some great experience in dealing with linux OS's and troubleshooting various hardware issues - and you're flying!
    I'd suggest a linux server :)

yep, you could install linux and learn it, or could just give it to someone, I'm sure they would be very very thankful.

    use it as a firewall.

Offer it up for charity maybe, lots of places would be only too willing to take it off your hands. Just a suggestion :)

Can be handy as a firewall, router, server, or just a test, backup machine to test parts, or even just give you web access if the new PC fails for some reason.

Yea, I was considering the charity thing, but the last time I tried that the nice lady in the shop told me that she didn't "need the tv thing just the computer". :D

I have an old copy of Red Hat at home, so I might try that approach.

The firewall option sounds interesting, but I'm not sure how it would work in practise. Wouldn't I need to attach it to the router in some way? That would involve buying an ethernet card (at the very least). I don't want to spend money, calis ;)
