There's an amazingly high number of people doing applied maths.

Yeah, considering a tiny amount of people in the whole country do it...

  • from this small segment, 77% are doing applied maths. i reckon that that's more than take a third language! :D

Being forced to do Irish is a sick joke. All I do in Irish is sleep. And i'll still proabably pass it. Seriously in what possible context am I ever going to use it.

G'wan the Applied Maths crew :)
Easiest subject out there in my opinion. Really short course and the exam itself offers lots of choice. Our class has been finished the course since early October so from then until the big exam is just revision from the 1976 LC to 2004
Hopefully I will be ready for LC 2005 come that exam.

Don't feel stupid, anyone who does Accounting... especially Higher level... automatically deserves respect as far as I'm concerned.

I was never able to get to grips with accounting or chemistry at Junior Cert. and looking at the books for the LC scares me!

    Except me. :p

TBH, I still can't totally get to grips with accounting, but it's not that hard, imo. If I tried to study it, I could probably do well.

    Econmics

All Higher level, and hopefully keepin it at that cuz im in 6th yr.
Fav subjects has to be either economics or german - why do so many ppl hate languages??!!! Irish is also up there *waits for the inevitable attack*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭*Angel*

I hate languages, well don't really hate but i'm not good at so therefore hate because it's not like ....... (can't think of a word, this'll do) about understanding the material it's about learning it.
I'm confusing myself, take maths or physics for example, in a question you're told what to do and you do it, because you understand the material you haven't just learnt it.

As for Irish so many do ordinary because there seems to be a lot of bloody poems and stuff to analyse. I do higher french and ordinary Irish, even though I think Irish is a lot easier, because we as Irish people rarely speak the language. So what the hell is the point of wasting time learning Irish when French is considered more useful.

Or you could just say the people on this thread are like their maths and stuff, I mean over half take app.maths (myself included) and that ain't true for the country at all.

You sound like me when I was in 6th year. Though this year I'm taking a module of Japanese in college and I absolutely love it.

Japanese sounds cool, apparently I have to take french for my course next year, ah well....

I did history at the start, but changed to physics after the first month because my teacher was crap and I wasn't enjoying it as much as I used to. I like physics anyway. I like maths, it's tough but I love a challenge. I understand it, but I did really badly in my Christmas exam and I havent a clue why. I think my mind was blank. Oh well, I'll just have to try harder after the holidays.
Thinking of doing applied maths outside of school, we dont have it at my school, but I know a guy who teaches it so I may take it as an extra subject.

    how many people?
Don't know an exact figure, but I'd guesstimate about 200-250

  • how do you know 17%? How many's in your class? there were 12?? people sitting it last year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭Barry Aldwell

    how do you know 17%?
It's a ballpark figure our teacher told us once. Trust me, he's not the kind of person who would get this kind of thing wrong.
How many's in your class? there were 12??
    Look up. There you go

I'm doing it as a module in 3rd year science in UCD, and I'd love to keep it up (actually more than I'd like to keep up my degree subject :o). I'm planning on applying to the JET programme at some stage.

I was doing 9 Higher untill the end of 5th year when I dropped Geography. I do 8 Higher because I need a C3 in Higher Math for college courses but will probably not be one of my top 6. Also do Higher English which will not be in my top 6 and was told by guidance councellor that Pass english would look bad on any form of c.v.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 362 ✭✭the smiley one

I was doin 8 honours at the start cuz my school makes everyone do it; and then when it came to the start of 6th year (decision time basically!) I didn't know what to drop cuz I wouldn't do pass english irish or maths cuz i love languages and have a good chance of doing well in maths; also of my choice subjects; I liked all of them except geography (meh) but I can get points in it so..........stuck with 8! Plus I'm doing well in all of them (minus a couple of slips!) so I suppose I'm just one of those "always have a back-up back-up plan". I should have joined the scouts..........

There seem to be alot of people doing 8 or more subjects. Is that how it's done in other schools or do alot of people take extra subjects outside? I'm only in 5th year, but in my school doing more than 7 subjects is very rare.

And Applied Maths is the subject of the Gods. We've done 5 of 10 chapters already and it's only January of 5th year - and we've done them properly aswell. If you are able for Honours Maths I would highly recommend anyone taking it on - it's the easiest A1 you're likely to get.

Currently doing 8 subjects in 5th year,i'll drop one next year.

History and English are my fave subjects.Currently keeping a 70 plus average in my difficult Business and English Honours classes which i'm pretty proud of.Agricultural Science isn't that popular here is it?

    In Order of Preference
    Music (H)
    Physics (H)
    Maths (H)
    German (O)
    Engeneering (H)
    English (O)
    Irish (O)
Music is the handyist subject for point's by far. 50% practical so if you can sing at all and have a good teacher organising you youll get a B at least in that section. Another 25% composing which is very mechanical, just follow a few rules and you wont go wrong. The rest is Listening which will come to you easily enough if you like music at all. App. Maths looks very complicated from the pappers but 10 chapters is a let off.
The f*cking Engeneering project is driving me cracked. F*cking Marble. The only reason I picked it was cus I did well in Metal Work in the LC
