List your favourite free software for Linux

There was a thread like this on the computers board a while ago. It was very successful. Basically, you give the name of the software, a linky where relevant, and what it does. I'm doing this for selfish reasons, because I want to know all the good stuff that's out there :D

If enough people respond, I'll put it all together in one big list.

    My faves:
apt - automated tool for installing / upgrading packages and dependencies. Great for noobs like me. :)
kwrite - notepad like text editor for the windows heads out there. Comes with KDE. "gedit" is similar in gnome.
    mozilla - web browser
mythtv - TV viewing / recording software ("apt-get install mythtv-suite"). You need mysql, and other stuff to use this properly. See this excellent howto aimed at Fedora Core.
synaptic - GUI frontend for apt ("apt-get install synaptic")
    yahoo messenger - instant messenger

That should be enough to get the ball rolling..... :)

<edit>I'm looking for something similar to norton ghost for linux...if anyone knows of such a thing, please shout. Thanks.</edit>

    beep-media-player(cvs) : gtk2 rewritre of xmms, with lib-visual as a viualisation framework
mpd : console music, better than mp3blaster imo
galleon : fast powerfull web browser (fast)
wget/curl : hardcoer web downloading tools
ncftp : best ftp client around, excellent for use in shell scripts

    Nice one. Thanks!

Fair play to the rest of you, this is turning into a decent list now. :)

I'll put it all together in one list in another few days (once it's been viewed enough).

    forgot to add myself:
    xmame - emulator
kemulator - xmame frontend for kde

aye, leave it build up for a while before making that list, it's a good idea this thread, there are similar posts over on the gentoo forums, but more specific, i.e post desktop eye candy application /// post favourite games /// post favourite file sharing utilitys .etc

maybe it would be good to catagorise them some how too - the list could get very big indeed.

    no one has mentioned:

    - VLC http://www.videolan.org/ - is a nice cross platform media player
    - valgrind http://valgrind.kde.org/ - does memory analysis of your code, finds bugs you haven't even encountered yet ... depending on how rigorous your testing is ;)

Maybe make it into a wiki entry on boards "biki" ?

like what, I still havnt found anything mplayer cant play, and i've been using it for a good 6+ years

Well, now that I think about it, it was on a mac which isn't exactly linux and is only a port not supported a whole lot and was no where near stable! That got me to install vlc everywhere else (it goes on almost anything!) and I've not had any reason to stop using it.

Most of mine are already here, but I'll say xfce again - I've just installed 4.2RC1 and it's good.

Also openswan - excellent IPSEC implementation.

Muine is a fairly nice little music player. (http://muine.gooeylinux.org/)
It's early days yet for it I'd say but some of the features are really cool. It'll automatically get the album cover image from the web for one thing.

Some of the Mono stuff going on right now is really cool.
Dashboard (http://www.nat.org/dashboard/) could be a real essential if support for it grows.

Off the top of my head, that haven't been mentioned already
    grip
    emacs (who said vim? Bah!)
abiword (sooo much nicer than OOo)
    wxGlade
Gnome (bloatware? I don't really care TBH)
    cron
    webmake
