I have a laptop win98 and when i boot up this real ear shattering noise comes over the speakers and when it stops booting the noise stops but if i open a program or folder or file the screaming starts again. Has anyone come across this problem and what did you do?

A problem shoved under the carpet is a problem solved :)

Did this always happen or just start ?
Has anything changed in the system ?
Is it by any chance the same kind of noise a modem makes ?

sounds to me that the internal speaker has come loose.
try pressing down on the area from where the noise is coming from
