went over to my mate's house to try and fix his mum's as the ntfs.sys file was corrupted so what we did was backed up everything that his mum needed and formatted the drive from his windows xp machine (it wouldn't let us format from inside her pc) but now the error we get is NTLDR is missing please hit ctrl alt del to restart?

we tried going into fdisk to make the partition active but it didn't work. also somehow the cd drive won't boot the xp home cd.

    any ideas fellows?

are you sure the drive is actually reading the xp disc

the reason im saying it is coz when i had a drive and the laser was going it wouldnt always notice i put a disc in and kept saying the drive was empty ..well when i did this with the windows xp disc i would get NTLDR is missing too

god i had to leave it for about 5hrs...then blow on it a bit..then cram the disc in and begged it would boot..finally got it installed after it crashed near the end saying it couldnt find a certain file

new drive...nice working 1 ..never had a problem booting from a disc since..

The 0.5KB Boot Loader at the start of the drive is trying to load NTLDR, that file then tries to load the rest of the OS.

How did you backup ? NTbackup ? Ghost ? or just copy doc files ?

If the drive was formatted then there is NO data on it so it won't boot.
If you had used ghost you could restore the image.
If you had used Ntbackup you could reintatll windows and then restore the backup.
Otherwise you will have to reinstall windows and then all the applications one by one, patch them all, setup drivers etc. etc. and then finally copy back over the copied files..

NTbackup.msi is on the XP Home CD for future reference.

Original XP home CD's have a press any key to boot option if you miss this then it won't boot. Plan B - put the drive back in the other PC, format the drive in FAT32 (not NTFS) and copy the CD on the the HDD, you can then put the HDD back, it will still give error messages, but you can get a windows 98 boot floopy or CD and into command prompt - C: - Cd i386 - winnt

we hooked the drive up as a slave to his machine and copied the required contents over
