I've 10 gigs of stuff I wanna copy over to my brothers PC. Short of breaking my back with a 256mb pen drive how should I do this?

I know macs can be set up as a server, http or ftp. Could I do this over USB cables? (or is that a Q which shows a fundamental misunderstanding of USB?) Or is a telephone wire between the machines the dealio?

You could setup an FTP server on the PC and upload the files.
eg: IIS is in add /remove programs - if it's XP you have to turn off the firewall
and it best to remove IIS and repatch the PC afterwards as It Isn't Secure.

www.macwindows.com - may have other options

You can't use USB - there is a special cable that is two USB network cards joined together but it's not a simple cable.
telephone would take forever and cost a fortune - while there are ways of getting a modem to work even if no voltage on telephone line it ain't worth the trouble. If the Mac does not have a network adaptor then get a USB one for it.
I'm assuming the PC has a network card -if not then its probably running an early version of windows and things get messier - you will also need a crossover cable to link them.

or borrow a USB hard drive for an evening !

if OS X is on the mac, it couldnt be easier. Just setup a shared folder on the PC and network the two. you can browse to the PC from the mac and transfer the files that way. If its OS 9, you can use a program called Dave to access SMB shares. It a 30day free trial AFAIR.

    or

you can get a USB transfer thingy from trust (im sure others to it too) it has software for both PC and mac. It allows you to connect the two VIA USB

    or lastly,

as cap'n says, "borrow" a USB HD

    Network by far the easiest.

I recently had to network my G4 to a A-team network (a rag tag group of PC laptop misfits) the Mac should just plug n play to the PC.

Aside a PC mate of mine just had a MACepiphany he spent six hours trying to get his desktop PC to see his WiFi connection to even recognise it was there then at midnight tried to get his girlfriends MAC to see it. It took five minutes, to have it working perfectly

right so I'm using OS X.3. I'm gathering this will be no probs at all with the appropriate cable plugged into the two machines (PC - XP Pro). Anything to watch out for?

crossover cable is all you need, just make sure file sharing is turned on on the windows box and you're sorted

Does the PC have Firewire ?? A simpler and quicker solution for that amount of data.

    ZEN

I'm pretty confident that it doesn't. Couldn't have it that easy could I? :p

i was trying to the firewire transfer thing a while back, how would one go about tranfering from mac to PC with just a straight forward firewire cable, my ibook has the firewire(big one) and the PC laptop has one of the smaller type connectors!!
