New port in €100m expansion scheme
    From:The Irish Independent
    Friday, 10th December, 2004

DROGHEDA Port Company has announced a €100m expansion plan which could create thousands of jobs along the east coast.

The initiative, which has yet to get planning approval from Fingal County Council, would see the creation a new port operation at Bremore, near Balbriggan in north Dublin, by 2009.

The development - involving public/private partnership - would see the construction of a state-of-the-art deepwater port.

Under the plan, unveiled yesterday, the first phase could cater for up to 5m tonnes of freight annually increasing to 20m tonnes in the medium to long term.

When operating to full capacity the new port will handle a significant share of the country's total port traffic.

The first phase of the development will be on 150 acres but there is an additional 250 acres available for further development.

Drogheda harbour master Martin Donnelly said the benefits to the local economy would be significant because of the increased number of people the new facility would bring to the area.

Access to the new port will be via a new link to the M1 and the Dublin-Belfast rail line will pass through the site.
