Just got to thinking about this recently, since I own a hawaiian-style shirt that I'm quite fond of (on the basis that it is comfortable, matches a few things I own, and unlike many such shirts, does not assault one's eyes like a laser beam). Now, these are divisive garments, so in time honoured fashion I am consulting the oracle that is the boards populace. What do you lot think?

Hawaiian shirts - yay or nay? 45 votes

I have a hawaiian shirt. Used to get a little bit of stick in school over it, but I didn't really care.

Still love it, must wear it more.

I have 4 awesome button down shirts! I love them...I wear a tank under neath and leave it open...they are comfy and cool
some of them are bad but if you have a bit of taste you can find a nice one and pull it off ;)

I like the idea of wearing something so clichéd out of sheer spite for so-called fashion sense. It's great!

Do I have to bring up Tom Selleck circa Magnum PI again?
    Ultimate style my friends!

Yes, they're the best things ever. With 80's style sunglasses!

You should wear that shirt *all* the time!

Hey simu... what about the shirt I was wearing at the beers? Teh style or nay!?

Don't know if it counts as Hawaian because it looks a bit tye-dyey but yes, up with that sort of thing!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

No no, it's definetly not Hawaian, but it's definetly very loud in colour. T'was the full print of Iron Maiden's album "Fear Of The Dark" is what it was.

    As seen here:

    iron_maiden_tree.jpg

    Teh sheer cheese!

Ok, that would just look absolutely retarded. Forget I said anything.

Well, I suppose fashion is like a sandwich - it's good to have a bit of cheese but you need meat and tomatoes and other stuff as well.

You're right, I'd neet a mullet for that tor work! :D

You know, this post made me miss rep, because my instinctive reaction after laughing out loud for a couple of minutes was "hmm, +karma time..aww.:("

Still, glad to see I'm not the only one who thought tom selleck was the sex in that show. And yay verily, more of that shirt! Pseudo-hawaiian + Iron Maiden = teh win!

i am a hawaiin shirt junky, i have twentyodd different ones, varying from a vintage 1960's californian one [with the original buttons!] to a variety of seriously epilepsy inducing dayglo manga inspired ones and graffiti based designs.... you cant put on an insanely loud shirt and skulk in a corner all night, you stand out and generally provide a riot of colour... theyre not for everyone but i adore mine.

for the record, i am not gay nor am i a big fat party animal.

hawaiin shirt plus a wife beater vest, baggy trousers plenty of chunky fake gold jewellry [i'm still desperately trying to keep the whole ironic bling thing on the fashion radar, thank god goldie lookin chain are bringin it back after it seemed i was doomed to be last seasons cliche for a few more minutes...]

I doubt that anyone from Hawai would have a cute blonde surfer look. Unless maybe they were a tourist.

Its winter. Its cold and dull otutside. The fashion police will hate you for it.

    I'd say: GO FOR IT!

If your comfortable in it, wear it. Just remember: next time you see a goth dressed in black, during the sunnist day in summer, you can't say nowt, for you wore a hawaiian-style shirt during winter :p

Cue a bunch of photos of langers wearing dodgy hawaiian shirts, apart from the two guys singing who actually looked ok. Well, maybe not ok, but their shirts were fine, at least.

Well, yes. But, on the other hand, I give you:

Al Pacino's Tony Montana wears one at the start of Scarface and he looks pretty damn good in it - couldn't find any pics, though.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 11,107 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fysh

After much searching (well, ok, some searching, but hey, I'm a child of the digital age and I want everything now! I...err...anyway, nevermind), I found this:

    scarface03.jpg

(Clearly now all we need is some cheap joke about how any nasty comments about that shirt will result in a visit from Tony's "Li'l frien'"....oh, wait)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,730 ✭✭✭✭simu

Wow - I gave up googling after seeing too many images of hot man-on-man love.

Ignoring the dripping blood, Al looks pretty good in that picture and Hawaiian shirts can look very good once the wearer is in good shape.
