Could Eamon Coughlan get a restrospective Olympic medal?

Story in the Irish Times today about how American Frank Shorter, who finished second in the Olympic marathon in Montreal in 1976 and is now a lawyer, is seeking to reopen his case to be awarded the gold on the grounds that the gold medal winner was found to have been doped to the gills.

Actually this was found out some time ago, when the Berlin wall came down and East German records were released. Shorter tried then to get his gold but was ruled out of order thanks to a statute of limitations.

Now however, according to the article, following the opening of the Balco can of worms in the states, somebody is making moves to have Marion Jones stripped of her five Olympic medals. If that happens, Shorter has said he will seek to have his case reopened.

If he receives a favourable ruling that could pave the way for Eamon Coughlan to claim a bronze medal for the 5000m in Moscow when he came fourth behind Miruts Yifter of Ethiopia, somebody else and Maarinka Hannes of Finland, who has since got religion and admitted that he was blood doped for that race. He has thrown his bronze medal away in remorse.

There may be some young people who haven't heard of Eamon Coughlan. Probably Ireland's greatest (male) middle distance runner since Ronnie Delaney. Fourth in two Olympics and inaugural World 5000m champion. Also holder of several indoor world records (in his day).
