I got the flyer for this in the door yesterday.

Well I picked up one of these this morning. The had plenty of them in stock.

Haven't really had time to check it out much yet. But it seems like a nice little unit.

Anyone know exactly how one goes about making a DIVX disc though? Do you just burn the files onto a disc?

yes you burn them to disc as data as far as I know

yeah , i got a divx player in superquinn for 89eu during the week
just record the avi to disc as data, you can even use a multisession disc and add things on as you get them, good for tv eps ;)
have a dvd half full of stuff now, just keep adding on as i get them :)

I got one of these this morning. Still in work though, so can't tell you anything about it.

Has anyone found a region hack for this yet? All the sites are in German, so I've had no luck so far.

Yeah. I had a quick look around a few sites with hacks too... didn't find anything. I think it's a fairly new model.. so maybe given time there might be something out there for it...

Got mine this morning. The Lidl in Ballina only got nine in but I got the eighth one at 9.01! :D Trying to connect it up with my old VCR and Digibox now. Cables bloody everywhere.

I didn't get into the Coolock branch till around 9.30. There they lots of all the specials stacked up on the shelves but none of the DVD recorders, so I was a bit worried. But I asked at the checkout and they brought one right out for me. The place really wasn't very busy, and I got the feeling they had plenty of them.

I've had a chance to try it out a little bit this evening. I'm very happy with it, it's Divx playback is excellent, I was able to fit 11 episodes of a TV series onto a single DVD and the playback is nice and crisp.

I haven't had a chance to use the recorder on it yet though.

And yes... the re-cabling was a bit of a nightmare... luckily my Dolby system isn't in the equation at the moment, as I had to put it away to make room for the christmas tree.... bleh.

I plugged in the machine last night and thought for ages I had gotten a dud.

For a start the fan made lots of noise when I switched it on. I thought it was broken but it sort of stepped down over about 5 minutes until it was only a whisper. Strange but seems ok now.

Then the picture on the TV was rolling and ghosted, even via the scart. Also the picture seemed to be on every channel, overriding the normal tuned in channels. I spent hours, trying other scart cables, a different tv, everything.

I finally got to the bottom of it, my tv is a few years old (holding out until the LCD prices come down) and it doesn't understand progressive scan. There is a button at the bottom of the remote which say NP, press that and hey presto, problem solved. I read this on the targa website, minutes before I was about to box the thing up and bring it back.

Once everything was working I played around with it. Recording is excellent. The quality is great, looks exactly like the broadcast. The features seem really good and it displays nice looking menus of everything you have recorded.

I know people who have some other burners have said that only certain brands of blanks work correctly. I have all sorts of cheapo blank dvds and I tried a few, everything worked perfectly.

I did an auto scan of the TV channels and it didn't pick everything up on NTL in Dublin. I just had to add one or two channels.

I tested out the Divx playback and it is not quite as good as a Goodmans Divx capable player I got in tesco last week. Some of the files I had went out of sync after a few minutes. It is fixed when you just pause and start playback again, but it is a little annoying. I know someone who has the Philips Divx player and they had the same problem, they found that so long as they reencoded all Divx files with Dr. Divx it fixed the problem but I haven't tried that yet.

All in all its an excellent piece of kit, but it would be nice to find a region hack and perhaps get a firmware upgrade to solve the audio sync problem.
