Permanent tan?

I'm just wondering if there is any way to get a permanent tan - bar sunbeds and fake tan bottles..
I've heard Tony Quinn do a tanning pill - anyone ever tried this? and if so does it really work?
I've also heard taking iodine with milk also has a tanning effect - is this true and if so is this not dangerous?

Any answers or other tips appreciated..

Tanning is a sign of skin damage and leads to early wrinkles and dry skin. The only way to have a permanent ('til you're dead) tan is to stay exposed to radiation constantly.

A tanning pill sounds like snake oil.

An all over tan coloured tattoo?

I am quite pale :) I have to laugh when people who have come back from a sun holiday are comparing their bronzed hide to my white skin / or when they come off the sunbed. Wait til they are older, full of wrinkles and damaged skin.

I'd rather be pale and have healthy skin than temporarily tanned and damaging it!

And don't get me started on fake tan - my god there are so many girls going around orange, some people just don't have a clue!

I don't get the whole tan thing, personally, I really don't think it looks that good on most people. On some people, yeah, but not on most. Besides, is it really worth the damage you're causing?

If you Tan anturaly go for it.

But Iv know some girls that if it wasn't for their fine white skin they wouldnt be nearly as attractive. And no matter what anyone says freckles can look really sweet and feacthing as well, so why damage your body it might be your best attribute. Myself im quite sallow skined from when I live in S.Africa so...... but I never try to tan. Normally I just like to have a Beer in the shade :D

Yeah, you dont want to end up like the old crone in 'theres something about mary' Years ago I heard of a tablet you took for an artificial tan that had some kind of carrot extract (!) I dont know if it was the tablet or not but the fellas taking it were a strange orange colour, which I would not recommend. They were too big to be oompa loompas btw.

A friend of mine once took tanning tablets and became orange. Contained beta carotene iirc.

You can't change your skin the way you'd change a jumper - live with it!

As for Tony Quinn - he's a bit dodgy. There was a big write up on his "seminars for better living" (aka money making scams) in the Sunday Tribune recently. I also remeber seeing in his catalogues a service that guaranteed dramatic changes in your life by sending his company money!

His food supplements are probably ok - vitamin c is vitamin c - but I'd rather give my money to less dodgy companies.

The tanning stuff from T quinn does NOT work.. well maybe it might for someone pale.. im naturally sort of dark so it did not make much difference to me.. i only used it out of curiosity.

99% of girls who get a tan look ridiculous and I can never help smiling when I see em come back from holidays comparing themselves and everyone telling em how healthy and lovely they look when really they only ever look like they been roasted for a week.

Yup, that's exactly what a lot of 'em look like! I don't mind a healthy glow from being in the sun, but coming back like you've just soaked yourself in mud is not good!

As for the fake tan business, you either stay the way you are or get a healthy glow from holidays, no more! Fake tan is so ridiculous and stooopid looking! :)

    P.S.

By healthy glow, I mean slightly tanned! Minimal exposure like!

There are products available which stimulate your skin's own pigmentation processes by increasing melanin production. eg. "Deeptan" This would at least be a somewhat natural way of tanning.

Taking iodine with milk sounds crazy to me. Iodine is a substance that your body needs only a tiny, tiny trace amount(for certain glands to function normally I believe). A lack of it results in goitre (swelling of the thyroid gland at the front of the neck, it looks like a ring of flesh around the neck), but I'd be inclined to think that an excess of it would also be bad, as would be the case with most any chemical. eg. salt in normal measures (ie. a pinch on your bag of chips) is ok, but too much causes high blood pressure and if enough is consumed too quickly (such as by drinking seawater) it can be fatal. It could be risking your health, maybe even your life just for a tan.

[Edit] Now that I come to think of it, isn't a damaged liver often indicated by a yellowish complexion, could explain the iodine in milk theory.

I like a slight tan, i.e. not pasty looking and prone to sunburn from camera flashes. However, two tone from excessive tanning / tan products / inappropriate tan lines is just scary.

Nothing to do with your question, but last April I went on a 6 hr cycle. The weather was hot and I didn't apply sun lotion. My arms and legs were burnt, not sorely burnt though. You know the way cycling tops are skin tight, I had a thin line between what was red and white. I can still see a colour difference now!
