There are currently two threads in the 'Motors' section re 1970/1980's cars and old Irish registrations i.e. up to 1986 - for those of you here with memories of same, please post your thoughts there.

I will also be starting another 1980's related car topic soon in the 'Motor's section.

The Brother had a Mazda 323

and if i recall correctly the reg plates were white at the front and red at the back, although they werent as strict on the colour of the reg plates as they are now.

also the letters identifying the car as being a limerick registration were TI

Heh, my dad had a Fiat 128 for a short while many years ago! Christ they were ugly. I think the Lada Riva looked somewhat similar.

Bloody hell! So had mine. It was blue, and the locks in the back had rusted so badly, they didn't work from the inside any more!

The Fiat 124 (not 128) and the Lada Riva were the same car. Fiat sold the Ruskies the assembly line in exchange for a lot of crappy thin steel which was used to build rustaway Fiats, Alfas and Lancias for about 10 years!

And remember when someone bought a new car, for a few days it would have a (handwritten) "FOR REG" sign!!

I recall one guy in my home town who drove for MONTHS with 'FOR REG' plates on his Renault 18 ! :D

Incidentially, red rear plates were officially introduced in 1971 so they were perfectly legal - unlike the many 'variant' reg plates we often see on cars today.

I used to wonder who this Reg fella was. ;)

Renault 5 was also a popular car iirc. you used to have to lift the front seat forward to get into the back, a car with more than three doors was considered flashy.

    also remember fiat ritmos (spelling)

We had a Datsun 1200, followed by a Renault 12, followed by a Volkswagen Derby, followed by a Ford Escort, followed by an Opel Kadett, followed by a Toyota Corolla.

I can still remember looking down at my feet in the old Datsun to see the road whizzing by underneath!
