Anyone know what it takes to get an SMS shortcode from the various operators and if a single shortcode can be used across all 3 networks?

    thanks

There are a few different methods. If you plan to set up a shortcode yourself you have to register your application with a company called comreg.ie i think. But the expensive part is getting it connected to the 3 or 4 networks, ranges from 3,700 to 5,000. They don't let just anyone into there systems so you are better off to try and get aq company to do it for you.

02 have separate department that handle these kind of queries. try calling them on 01 6095496

It's expensive to get a short cod yourself but there are a few companies providing the service

    try iword (www.iword.ie)
they sell keywords a bit like domain names
the only issue is that their payout is rather low.

You could use a 2 euro billed messages.
It would be made up of 50 cent incoming and 1.50Euro return.
If you buy their Premium business Keyword for 149.99 per annum
then the payout is 41 cent per 2 euro transaction.

they can enhance this up to 82 cent if you pay 450 Euro for the keyword.
they usually pay you 2 months after the service runs...

You need to get a shortcode from ComReg. Shortcodes are divided up by tarriff eg. 51xxx is at standard rate, 53xxx 30c, 57xxx €1 and 59xxx used for adult. There are a few forms to be filled in but it is relatively straightforward.

The next step is to get connected to each of the networks. This is the expensive part and believe me it is an expensive proposition. Many operators have a monthly fee or only start paying out after a certain volume has been reached. You would need to have substantial funding in place to own and connect your own short code. Bear in mind that the operators keep quite a high percentage of the call cost as they will argue that they are giving you access to their customers. The payout to you increases if you use a higher tarrif.

You could use the services of an aggregator. These are companies that have their own shortcodes an allow different companies piggyback on them. Each service is separated by using a keyword. Many of these have no upfront costs and they give you a precentage of the revenue share.

Separate to the shortcode is the advertising and marketing. These services are only really profitable if you can drive volume. The ringtone people spend millions promoting their services and that's why they've moved to the subsription model.
