PC won't shut down

Stoopid PC has, suddenly, decided it doesn't want to shut down. I'm running XP Pro on an Asus 798X V.20 Deluxe motherboard.

If I perform shutdown via Windows the bleedin' thing reboots. However, it also reboots if I bang the Power Off button. I couldn't get the frakking thing to switch off last night and finally had to use the kill switch at the back, much as I didn't want to. Anyone else had this problem which, unlike the ones on the web, doesn't seem to be just a Windows thing?

    I hate soft power
you can do things like change the on/off button to become the suspend button.

    Any error messages ?
press and hold the button in for 5 seconds should power it off.

if it's windows , try in safe mode / command prompt only / rcovery console / vga mode etc. - the minimum config that you version of windows supports, then shutdown again - if the problem goes away then it is an app or driver.

    BTW:
I've XP on a laptop that gives a STOP IRQL_not_less_equal error when shutting down - if it was NT then I'd have the driver address to work from but since it's "hide everything" XP I don't - also since it crashes on shutdown nothing in event viewer
    happens in recovery console too..
    have SP2'd & windows updated

no blue screens when in windows, does not occur on suspend
have tried different user accounts - all the same.
have flashed bios to latest version

No such problem in Linux - so sw related

    Anyone any ideas ?

Try downloading this program, its like an off timer and you set when you want the comp turned off and it does it for you. Handy when you have downloads on and the like.

Actually, cheers I'll give that a shot as I often have downloads on. Right now for example, yet it'll be done around 1pm and the PC would be just sucking up energy until I get home.

Something simular happen to me once before.

Firstbale I found out if I press power again when the system reboots but still in bios and before Windows starts I can shutdone the system.

But as solution I found out it was caused by a new device I added on the USB port. After I remove this device from USB the problem fixed itself.

Check in the BIOS if one of the settings such as WAKEUP ON LAN or RESUME ON RING LAN is activated. I'm pretty sure your mobo has a firewire port which is seen as a network device.
