    Howyiz LadsNLassies!

I have a Compaq EVO N1020V that has no screen and im finding it hard to get rid off, so I was thinking of using it as a car PC. Leaving it in the boot strapped in some how and linking a couple of 7'' screens off it, I have a bluetooth phone which i should be able to surf the net off etc, its got a DVD player plus a ton of MP3s... anyone any info on the power that i'd need and if the laptop would work off the 12V power in the boot. Also if theres anywhere in Dub that sell 7" screens. Any ideas how I could split the display into two screens.

    Any ideas welcome.

I know you can buy these things where you plug them into the cig. lighter and then it becomes a standard home plug! They are made by Belkin last time i seen one it was in argos... so bassically with this thing you could power any household item (eg.. TV.. Microwave.. George Forman..:D)

    Really Unique idea isnt it.
Google is your best bet like a quick one here ,i know some new cars have house hold plugs in the boot(Golf Mk V) but think its just run off a power convertor from the battery, once thats done lots and lots of wiring
How cool would a pc in a car be (one can only dream)

Are you serious? I had a pc in my car 3 yrs ago. There's a huge community / industry out there doing it.

Its called an inverter and tbh they're crap. Very noisy and not needed at all.
what they do is invert the 12v dc of the car battery to 220v ac.

But why not use the 12v dc to power your mobo and hdd and cd directly. All you need is some relatively simple circuits and you can get 5v and 3.3v at approx 100W and you're away with it.

But as i said check out that site. it's the home of the car pc community

I was actually referring to the childish way you jumped down my throat.

Mod's are there to stop posts exactly like those not make them.
Now enough, back to car pc's...

He he just reread it-thats not jumping down your throat at all.
But your Quite right,i apologize :(
Now back to helping this man (and also teaching me more about car pcs)
As you seem to know quite a bit does the vibration play havoc with the pc

The vibration affects the hard drive but not much else as its the only moving part.

What i did was mount it using spring washers but there are better ways.
It's become such a big industry that you can buy custom pcs for cars now.
www.cartft.com are the best in europe and you dont have to pay customs as they're based in the EU

No took it out and sold it but it was class. I still have the screen at home actually. Never got around to selling it.

It's not easy to get everything setup and running perfectly but you do learn a lot and it is very enjoyable if youhave a few quid to spare. I reckon €500 would get you going and €1000 would get you a top of the range setup with gps, xbox, dvd, wlan etc

Well you could have a buyer with Hashslinging but i'll leave that to ye.
Defo gives ya food for thought next time you go out to but a cd player for the car. Anyworries with hooking it to the sound system?

    Hmm.....

I was thinking about this yesterday and was going to post about it today!
Knew it would be possible but the psu would be tricky to get round, already taken care of by the looks of the above link.
Now what a i need is money, lots of it, a car.....

It used to be and i even did a diy jobbie but now dc -dc psu's are common as muck and good quality too. There's an entire section devoted on them on mp3car
