    Hi....

Can anyone tell me if they'd recommend this camera?
Is it the same as the 'Canon EOS 300 rebel' ?

I really like the idea of having the features and accessories I had with my non-digital slr.
    This one looks great....is it??

    thanks.

yes, a brilliant camera at a vera afforable price now and you can fit any of the canon lenses onto it so its easily upgradable. I used one for six months before it was robbed off me and I'd have no hesitation at all in reccomending one

what kind of stuff do you want to shoot with it?
do you have any lenses already?

Great camera. I have one for about 5 months now. Great for experimenting.
All your current lenses will work with it. :D

nikon D70 looks like better choice,

nikon has some points better, canon has other good points
if you own canon lenses already, no point in switching to Nikon

From my canon experience (I've had 3 different EOS's over the past 12 or so years) I can't see myself ever moving away from Canon

I has some better features, but the reviews that I have seen rate the two as about the same for picture quality (there is a better sharpening algorithm in the Nikon, but it suffers from moire problems. The Canon has better noise reduction in images, and can get much higher sensitivity - to 100ISO)

The decider for me going with the Canon was the cost though. Canon are offering great deals on the 300D at the moment with rebates on the street price. So while the Nikon has a slight edge on the Canon it doesn't have a €300 edge.

Yeah, cost was the issue before but now canon is 1021 with lens and CF card where D70 is something like 1161 with lens but without CF card. However, canon feels like 300yoyo's cheaper

D70 has very fast shutter release and great continuous shooting, 1/500 shutter speed(flash) and other small things .

You are correct about ISO 100 , D70 fails there OK but on overall delivers more detail then 300 and specially at new price is worth consideration.

on the other hand you can flash firmware on 300 to get more features.

I think prices should fall even further as 20D is out there

Just got mine in the US, with Canon 50mm f1.8 lens, the Canon 75-300mm USM IS lens and a 1GB card for $1500 or €1127. And that is before the $230 dollar rebate :D

I had a play and feel in Dublin before I bought and I didn't think so. I used to have a Canon 300N and that felt much lighter.

Anyway I take the camera hiking and mountaineering so I have never been too keen on the extra weight in those Nikon metal frame monsters! :)

Terriffic camara. Nikon D70 is ok but is more expensive, has poorer lens choice and in my opinion, doesn't produce photos as good as the canon. As someone else mentioned you can install a different firmware (the 300D runs DOS) and get most of the features of the 10D.

if you're in any doubt as to the quality of the 300D check out http://www.pbase.com/zylen

i just bought a Canon 20D from the US for almost the same as you buy a 300D in Ireland

Where did you guys (sliabh & DotOrg) order the 20D from in the US and would you be concerned about a reasonably delicate piece of optical equipment being shipped to Ireland?

My girlfriend got it from Amazon in the US and she is hand transported to Ireland. But if you were ordering direct you can specify courier delivery (which will be costly)

Nomatica's already been mentioned but you can also try

    cam-ireland.com
    pixmania.com

You may not get an english manual buying from these places though, but PDF versions are available on the net.

Also, the UK Canon outlet on Ebay.co.uk sometimes has cheap refurbed equipment. Stock varies from time to time but its worth checking regularly.

If you are keen on the 300D, the deal I'd go for is the bundle Jessops in the UK currently have on their site - its the black model and it comes with a CF card and some other accessories for a very good price.

Another alternative, and what I'd go for is a slightly used 10D as I much prefer the heavier metal body.

i got my 20D from http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ in New York
I've actually been in their physical shop and it's a great service whether you order online or in the shop

No worried about shipping as it was really well packaged, these guys ship stuff round the world every day and if it was damaged they'd send another one as that's why they use UPS for delivery as the price covers loss or damage

You may get stung for tax and duty on it coming into Ireland but itr will normally still work out cheaper than buying it in Ireland or you may get lucky and it gets missed by customs

    I wouldn't buy the 10D over the 20D
The 20D is faster, big buffer, bigger images, the 3 main components in a pro camera in my eyes

I agree Dot (using a 20D myself at the moment), but I recommended a 10D at Jim10k's price point which is 300D money. The 20 costs substantially more.

depends on the type of shots you plan on taking.

would he prefer to have a bigger image so cropping is easier, does he need a faster buffer rate etc

the price difference isn't huge between the 20D and 10D and in some places the 10D is still more expensive

I've been looking a lot recently at the 300d (rebel) Especially with the rebate it's an attractive price. The rebate is constant though. 100 sterling in britain, 100 yoyo here, 100 dollars there. So where is it the cheapest? if I were to buy it from Amazon for e.g would I even be eligble for the 100 sterling discount?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,011 ✭✭✭sliabh

On the rebate, in the US Canon will double and triple it if you buy more Canon hardware. There is details here:

    http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/rebates/

That may help, as I don't think a similar scheme is in operation on this side of the Atlantic.

I reckon two lenses would be a good idea anyway. Now to find someone in the states! Reading down the responses there seems to be a little dissillusion with the rebate scheme actually being followed through on though... ?

I had better be work I have $230 riding on it! (about €4.56 at current rates :) )

But from me experience of these things they are slow (6-8 weeks) and meticulous, anything to avoid paying you the cash. But I have never heard myself of someone getting stiffed.

have you recently purchased from a US source and had it posted over here? or how you do it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,011 ✭✭✭sliabh

When you get the camera you take the proof of purchase and send it with the form (like the one on photo.net) to an agency in the US.

AFAIK the return address has to be in the US as well. But the small print is probably on the Canon site somewhere.

After a wait (6 weeks minimum) they send the cheque. I have done this with Dell PCs bought in Ireland. They will stick to the letter of the agreement but will make it as awkward as possible otherwise. With Dell I had to ring customer service to get them to tell me where on their website the rebate form was hidden. The rebate of course was well publicised when I was making the purchase.

so I could buy it online. And then put the return address as my GFs holiday home in Florida? Cos teh rebate form says you have to be a legal resident of the 50 states to claim. in the very small print

    Another vote for BHphotovideo here.

I've had no probs ordering from them and the shop is always worth visiting when in New York.
