    Here's a fuller story from waterford-today.ie

If we can't go north, we'll go west!
An area plan for the North West Suburbs (Gracedieu), which has taken over five years to formulate, has gone on public display at City Hall. The action plan details land uses, densities of development, arrangements of open spaces, road layout, including pedestrian and cycle ways and integrating new neighbourhoods in the area with existing development.

The main focus of the plan concentrates on development around two new neighbourhood centres. Each centre will contain a mix of uses including, housing, retail, employment, education and community services.

This innovative design which was presented to City Council members on Monday night last is endeavouring to shift development policy in the city from low density residential development, with seperation of residential and employment uses and over reliance on private transport to a compact neighbourhood with a range of facilities at its centre and residential areas within easy walking distance of the centre.

The plan allows for the creation of two distinct new neighbourhoods, each with a population of approximately 6,000. Neighbourhood One is envisaged as accommodating a larger Neighbourhood centre which would serve the two neighbourhoods and the wider area. The centre is to be located in the Bawndaw and Carrickpherish areas, on the new Carrickpherish radial road, linking the Knockhouse and Cleaboy roads. It is envisaged that the centre will accommodate two schools, retail developments, playing fields and other community facilities.

Although the plan was received with great enthusiasm by council members a number of councillors outlined concerns in relation to the infrastructure needed to ensure that a repeat of a situation similar to the one that exist on the Dunmore Road is not repeated. Cllr Hilary Quinlan, FG stated “we need to ensure there is proper infrastructure and roads into the area.

The new road will will open in February and we need to look at the junction between Gracedieu Road and Logloss.

We need to learn from mistakes on the Dunmore Road, we have to get infrastructure right if this is going to work.” Meanwhile Cllr Seamus Ryan, Mayor urged the people who live in the areas mentioned to make contributions and “get involved in the process” to ensure that they feel included in process and have their say.

    Mike.
